My go-to strategy is to find a character from fiction, do my best impression of them, and then see what I can add to it... It's a bit campy, but I enjoy it all the more... Are there any particular characters (other than Her™️) that inspire you?

Huh! Well, if you say so! I love world building, I think it's the only thing I'm good at lol. Although for me a character's actions are a part of world building. They need to make sense otherwise the world falls apart. (They don't have to be rational, but they have to make sense)

Most of the plot takes place in the Midwest/ wild west where bands of sky pirates raid cargo airships, religious cultists rule cities, and various groups fight for their independence.

The largest faction is still based on the United States government, but it's a shell of its former self and is basically 10 corporate trusts in a trench coat. It's doing its best to maintain control over at least the eastern US, but it struggles to maintain sovereignty beyond the Mississippi.

Huh, I hadn't thought about it that way. So what exactly is fantastical? I mean some of the applications of the technology is less than realistic, hydrogen airships may not have actually have the buoyancy to lift ships as massive as I am designing? It's even based on real periods in American history

It's set in a post-apocalyptic future tho, and takes place with technology roughly equivalent to what we had from the 19 10s through 50s, as well as some surviving artifacts.

I literally came up with the entire premise because I was watching videos of old bucket chain excavators and I wanted to create a setting where people lived on large roving vehicles, but that was less absurd than mortal engines.

Well you've written more fiction than me... The closest thing I've ever written to fiction is realistic scenarios for nuclear crises, and short comedic posts. Learning is hard and it can be painful but that doesn't mean you won't make progress.
