Excited to have my art Topological Trio included in the Bridges 2026 Exhibition of Mathematical Art, Craft, and Design, held this week in Galway, Ireland. My related paper is also part of the program. #MathArt #LEGO
These three LEGO designs celebrate several topological structures. A model of Borromean rings is constructed in red, green, and blue; the brick dimensions offer just enough tolerance to feel the rings are separate. An orderly tangle of six squares is constructed from six layered squares made of white and tan plates. A double layered cube based on a design by Rinus Roelofs is constructed from three layers of plates.

My piece Spaceship Earth. Thinking about the only home we will ever know on this Earth Day. drmathart.com/Artwork/Spac... #MathArt #EarthDay
The title is from the same phrase popularized in the 1960s by R. Buckminster "Bucky" Fuller. Fuller also popularized the geodesic dome, which has a related construction. This work is based on the 2,1-Goldberg polyhedron where the edges have been replaced with rhombic pieces of colored corrugated plastic. This piece is an abstract model of the Earth make from 210 pieces: 60 green pieces and 150 blue pieces. About 71% of the pieces are blue, which is about the same percentage of the Earth's surface covered by water. We are individuals, yet travel through space together, inhabitants on and caretakers of the same tiny planet we call Earth.

#MathArtMarch Day 5: Discovery Julia is the Solution This work pays homage to Julia Robinson (1919–1985). Her work was a critical component in discovering a proof (negatively) of Hilbert's tenth problem. #MathArt
The image, based on a photograph, is made from 1919 stippled X's. The size, crossing angle, and arm dimensions of each X is related to the original photo’s brightness and local gradient. The use of the X symbol celebrates her work on Hilbert's tenth problem and the common use of the X symbol for an unknown variable.

#MathArtMarch Day 3: Nature Swirling Snowflakes It wasn't until the early 1900s that scientists began to understand the nature of frozen water crystals that leads to their beautiful structure. #MathArt

41 superellipses on a rotated square grid. Because 41 is a prime that is one more than multiple of 4 (congruent to 1 mod 4), it can be represented as a sum of two squares. In this case, 41 = 4*4 + 5*5.
