The Latin word castellum is where ‘castle’ comes from-it means a fortified place like a little fort. In our country today, we all need emotional, as well as physical, protection. It’s so valuable to recognize symptoms of trauma and consider what can we do to help our symptoms, as well as others’.1/3

A castle can be inside of us: The book we read for inspiration; a song that brings us hope; a friend who is so loyal; a pet who adores us. Of course there is the possibility of loss, especially in our world today where deportation and harm can go hand in hand. 1/3

We need our own castle, somewhere safe. Some do not have homes. For others rent goes up and a house is not affordable. It is not easy living in our times. In other countries where there are wars, or even not, homes and schools are bombed and food is scarce. 1/3

Avoiding moral injury when traumatic events are being thrown at us- now that’s an accomplishment! Moral injury is when we feel ashamed and helpless, guilty and horrified, at what we witness because it is outside our value system 1/4

A 3-D pumpkin shows not only the insides, but also the outside shape. That’s what we need to do with trauma- recognize the symptoms that come out of ourselves to affect the ways we look, act, and appear on the outside. 1/2

When traumatic events occur in our country, one after the other, we can select a few things most important to us. We may choose immigration and search for a group working to help in this area. Our contribution may be money and/or what else would they suggest? 1/2

Self-Nourishment and Serving Our Country in the Face of Trauma One trauma symptom is HYPERVIGILANCE where we are jumpy and anxious so the temptation may be to avoid going to meetings. Self-nourishment is so important, like good meals and caring friends! 1/2

Moral injury is like feeling tired and wilted from the ongoing traumatic events of our times. They keep piling up. And we can see the wreckage left behind, both in our buildings and our discouragement. The smells of dill, marjoram, and rosemary are fun and can add to the taste of our food. 1/4

Moral injury includes the sadness and shame we carry with us like a suitcase from the past. What did we witness, or do, or not do? We may not have been able to cause a change, seen someone harmed by ICE, been unable to rescue a five year old from ICE detention, and seen many job losses. 1/3

What brings you comfort? For some, having indoor plants can make a smile appear, especially when they bloom. It may be difficult, though. Because some of us feel survivor’s guilt: How can we be happy if someone survives an event when others do not,or someone is not laid off when others are fired. 1/3

Sleep is important! We need rest to relax our brains and feel healthy during these troubled times. Sometimes it’s easier said than done. We must be able to plan when to sleep and to keep out traumatic/stressful thoughts that could get in the way of falling asleep. 1/2
