I don’t think people are fighting against Vance enough. He’s vile. And he will be here long after the orange fucktard is gone

I love that. It’s the same on the Uists. I’m an enthusiastic over-waver when I go up to the Hebrides each year 😂

Zero. No new hospitals at all. One completed major, entirely new cancer unit, and 5 other substantial new units or redevelopments underway currently. Quite a bit short of that 40 new hospitals pledge. Pathetic

Face painting with a twist. Draw from a pot to see who will be painting you, then from a second pot to see what they will be painting. Then collect the relevant guide photo from the designs wall Did we all nail it? 😂

100% this! Respect shouldn’t come from an outfit or age! It should just be there unless behaviourally someone gives cause for it to be lost

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Yeah, it’s a nice way to convey respect. But I find it incredibly hard to judge which to use and when, both in Germany and France!

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
That’s a really good approach! And it avoids so much hassle. We are taught to do that but it’s slipped from patter somehow! Must reintroduce it. Thanks!

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Because you use a nickname or a middle name? I feel the same about being Sunday-named when called into a consulting room 😂

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Agreed! It’s very niche, social nuance, isn’t it!?

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
That’s exactly what I say to patients! “Hi, I’m Nicki, one of the doctors” Very occasionally, if I pick up an unusual vibe from a patient as they come in, I’ll stick to Dr Lygo, to maintain some protective distance. But that’s extremely rare.

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Ah yes, but only with surgeons. The senior doctors on the medical side all use Dr. throughout their career Surgeons used to be barbers. That’s why they lose the title. I would be really cheesed off 😂

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Oh crikey. Then alert, coherent and chatty is a bit odd Bring on not being patronised by the younger generation eh? 🙈
010
Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Yeah, this works both ways Some doctors prefer to be addressed as “Dr surname” but the majority of younger doctors use first names only. It does invite unwanted familiarity at times, but it does put patients at ease. It’s a fine line! I still address older patients by Mr/Mrs surname, not darling!

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
That said, if you went in with something completely innocuous then I would roll my eyes at that because then it’s an age comment rather than relating to the medical context! 🙈
100
Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
That must sound awful to read, but there is medical mileage in that statement whatever age you are (depending on what you went in with)! We have to demonstrate evidence for our medical plans and lack of drowsiness, lack of cognitive deficit and decent mood genuinely applies to young patients too

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
😂 Fair response. I might try that!

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I am on the receiving end of ‘ah, bless you’ every 5 minutes when I’m a patient. It’s a hard no from me. It’s either patronising or a sign that I’m not being heard!
201
Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Oh this is another one I face daily. I hear this much more as a patient than a doctor and usually from people who are about 20. It goes right on the list alongside ‘babe’ 🤢

Nicki Lygo @drlygo.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
Mention it to the nurse in charge next time it happens. They will be able to make some changes.

Rhabdomyolysis (or “rhabdo” for short) keeps popping up everywhere for me at the moment. It also seems that many endurance runners aren’t familiar with it, so here’s a whistle-stop tour: 🧵 1/10 (It's still brief, honest!)

90 years ago, Parliament responded to the rise of Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts by passing the Public Order Act, which banned political uniforms, private militias and the threat of force for political objects. The debates make very resonant reading today. Here's the Liberal Robert Bernays. (Short 🧵)
You cannot conduct a fair match when one side is playing with a ball and the other with bombs and, if democracy is to survive, it must be conducted according to definite and recognised rule. One of them is that no political party should resort to any weapon other than reason and argument. The introduction of private armies, as I see it, strikes at the root of democracy. I know it is contended that the Blackshirts are not armed and, therefore, are not an army, but I do not think that argument can be upheld. … Uniformed men in military formation suggest, and are meant to suggest, the idea of force. It is no argument to reply that at this or that demonstration no force is intended. It is an inescapable fact that a uniform in politics symbolises force, to be used either now or in the future.
