The simplest way to avoid harming other animals is by not paying people to exploit them. 🎨 VeganSideKick
This image is a four-panel comic by Vegan Sidekick. In the first panel, one character asks, "How come you want to kill animals?" The second character responds, shocked, "OMG! I don’t! I’d never harm an animal!" In the second panel, the first character points out, "But you buy animal products... If you saw an animal being harmed, would you pay the person harming them, or ask them to stop?" The second character replies, "DUH! I’d ask them to stop because I am just SO AGAINST ANIMALS BEING HARMED."

In the third panel, the first character questions, "So what’s the difference? You know animals are being harmed, and you’re paying the ones who do it." The second character replies, "The difference is I can’t see it happening, so I can pretend it isn’t."

In the fourth panel, the first character asks, "Well, can I show you a video of what it is you’re paying for?" The second character responds bluntly, "No."

Big news from Manchester Met via @manmetuni.bsky.social and @manmetuta.bsky.social: 31 new AdvanceHE Fellowships awarded in October! 🙌 Representation from all faculties AND professional services across D1-4. Recognition should reflect contribution—not job title. #HigherEd #TeachingExcellence

So lovely to come back off leave and see that our Manchester Met colleagues have secured 2 NTFS and 1 CATE award. Supporting these colleagues from within @manmetuta.bsky.social (formally as TEAL until December 2024) has been a real privilege and they are worthy winners.

Received notificaiton that subject to some minor revisions a journal paper of mine had been accepted. The really great thing though is that both anonymous reviewers gave kind, measured and really constructive feedback about the paper - academic publications can be a kind process too!

Have you ever thought of it like this?
We free living billions of wild animals to protect the animals we eat. We then destroy our environment to feed the animals we eat. We spend more time, money, and resources fattening the animals we eat, than we do feeding humans who are actually starving. The greatest irony is that after all the expense of raising these animals, we eat them, and they kill us... And instead of acknowledging this absurdity, we torture and kill millions of other animals trying to find a cure to the diseases caused by eating animals in the first place. When it comes to eating, humans are without question the most irrational animals on the planet.

I was in a fab teaching obs this week where discussions were around the language of 'eco-friendly' marketing and it struck me how, in order to change anything in the world, we probably need to label the other side too. Eco-harmful and cruelty-full (that one's rubbish) labels needed. Just a thought.

Schrödinger's chicken 🐥 🎨 VengefulVegan
A two-panel meme featuring a retro-style cartoon character reading a book.

1. The first panel shows a man in a yellow vest and white shirt reading a book titled **"Guinness Book of Excuses."** The text above reads, **"Non-Vegans:"**
2. The second panel is a close-up of the book, showing two contradictory statements:
   - **#403:** "Farmed animals would go extinct if we stopped killing them."
   - **#404:** "Farmed animals would overpopulate if we stopped killing them."

The meme humorously highlights the contradictory arguments often used to justify animal exploitation.

Dairy is the destruction of motherhood 💔
A cartoon showing a woman sitting on a chair, feeding her baby with a bottle while looking at her phone. The bottle is connected to a tube leading to a crying cow being milked by a machine. Beside the cow, her calf looks on, visibly distressed. The artwork is signed "Shadi Alashoush Caricature 29/5/2015."

Academic life has its ups and downs. Yesterday was one of those rare days when I was able to work on some #SoTL publications and write so freely, that I got so much done. Today, I woke up feeling like I don't know what words even are! Does anyone else struggle with 'maintaining' an academic flow?

i LoVe AnImAlS 🤪 🎨 VeganSideKick
This image is a four-panel comic from Vegan Sidekick. Here's a description for each panel:

1. The first panel shows a person with a knife saying to a lamb, "Come here little lamb, I'm going to slit your throat and eat your legs." Another person responds, "You don’t have to do that, you could eat something else."
2. The second panel shows the person with the knife shouting "STOP ATTACKING ME!" while continuing to hold the lamb and the other person replying "I'm not"
3. The third panel has the person with the knife yelling, "YES YOU ARE! YOU VEGANS JUST CAN'T STAND ANYONE ELSE HAVING A DIFFERENT OPINION. SO YOU ATTACK US!" The other person replies, "No, you are attacking that animal. I was trying to defend them from you."
4. The fourth panel shows the person with the knife saying, "Defend them from me? Why would you do that? I love animals," while eating the lamb. The other person stands silently watching.

The comic highlights a satirical argument about veganism and animal rights.

While the success of our SFHEA dialogue scheme at Man Met is awesome, the numbers this term have been tiring at times. However, today we got to do such an inspirational dialogue with a colleague doing extraordinary work - a genuine joy. A lovely way to round out my day.

A vegan Thanksgiving meal emits only 1.5 kg of CO2e per portion—nearly 70% less than an omnivorous meal. Choosing plant-based options like tofurkey and dairy-free dishes significantly reduces your carbon footprint, showing respect to both animals and the planet.
Chart comparing the carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions of Thanksgiving meals by dish and diet: omnivorous (5.32 kg total), vegetarian (4.66 kg total), and vegan (1.5 kg total). Dishes include turkey or tofurkey, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, stuffing, gravy, cranberries, green beans, pumpkin pie, ice cream, and cheese plate. Vegan options consistently show the lowest emissions. The chart highlights that plant-based Thanksgiving meals are significantly better for the climate. The natural lifespan of a turkey is around 10 years, but through selective breeding, turkeys reach “market size” in just several weeks. Some do not survive even that long 💔

You might think this is a rare occurrence...but it's really the norm. Steps up to buildings, ramps at the wrong pitch (but hey, they look nice), accessible entrances but no push button doors in the building, reception desks with no lowered section, lecture theatres with no accessible seating...
