If I got one of these made of our elderly cat, do you think they could accurately portray the eye boogers, drool when being petted, and signature pose of ‘hissing at the children?’
An ad for ‘cuddle clones: unmatched accuracy down to the last detail’. There’s a phot of a dog and a stuffed animal that looks a lot like the dog.

This night heron (wild, native species) who likes to hang out in the penguin enclosure is my favorite animal by far at the Santa Barbara zoo.
A bunch of Humboldt penguins standing on a rock waiting in line for fish. There’s a heron also there too across from the penguin queue— they have the same general coloring as the penguins but different legs and different beak.

Seeking Latinx parents of kids who use/once used AAC devices for a BA thesis survey on how to design these tools better. Please feel free to circulate widely.
My name is Arlee Vallin, and I am an undergraduate Biospychology major with a minor in
Speech, Language, and Science Disorders at UCSB. I am conducting a research study examining
the experiences of Latinx families with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder
(ASD) who communicate via augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, and
more specifically, understanding parents’ perspectives and experiences with these tools. I am
also interested in examining the different perspectives of each parent within one family.
If you are interested, participating involves completing an online survey that will take
approximately 10 minutes to complete. Your participation is completely voluntary, and your
responses are completely confidential.
If you are interested in participating, please use the link below to access the survey. We welcome
multiple surveys per family; do one survey per parent:
English: https://forms.gle/awN4q1jKRkRXGAtf8

If you have any questions, contact me at arleevallin@ucsb.edu or Professor Laurel Brehm,
Department of Linguistics, University of California, Santa Barbara,
lbrehm@linguistics.ucsb.edu. Thank you for considering participation in this research.

Lab cleanup today. Found the label maker and also suppressed the urge to label the inside box with ’probably useless shit’.

Household cats organized some fun party games for the house today: ‘find the pee’ and ‘pin the tail on the lizard’. Good thing they are cute.

handout prep for 'intro to experimental design' going pretty ok
snippet of a handout with the following text: "Why do we need to think about stats in experimental design? See H&W SGEP chapter ‘Inferring Causality’.

Lord’s Paradox: *you can’t fix design with statistics*
-If groups are not random, but differ at baseline before your manipulation, results differ depending on your underlying causal model & whether you statistically ‘correct’ for baseline

Simpson’s paradox: *not accounting for existing differences can reverse your results*
-If there is a systematic difference within each group, but a larger difference between groups, the ‘true’ pattern gets obscured or even reversed.

and then two figures-- one explains the Lord's Paradox in equations and the other is of the Simpsons.
