As a physics prof, I'd like to endorse your endorsement. Learning just about anything is best done 1:1. But for a society we know that is extremely impractical. I think I recall the next breakpoint being like 12–15 and then 30–40. And I think I remember that after that, it's all the same.

This exactly! This is why universities used to have a College of Liberal Arts that included humanities, social science, physical science, and life science. I think part of the issue was splitting that in two.
