We found that the carnivorous Sundews were more or less carnivorous depending on microhabitat conditions. 🌍🧪 #peatland #carnivorousplant

Spot the incorrect AI 'fact': Bladderworts: turning to algae and pollen as a food source. Round-leaved Sundews: refusing to eat insects and instead suggesting vegetables like Brussels sprouts and kale. Sundews: becoming less interested in eating insects due to increased soil nitrogen levels.

I went to a couple a few years back, tiny little remnants with giant drosera. Most southerly raised bog in Europe! Would be good to do more with those though as they experience very different climate to those in sweden

With these specimens I want to test non destructive approaches for measuring traits... to then measure traits accross 000s of specimens to understand spatiotemporal patterns in context of environmental change.

This is interesting. Did you see the Dynamic Dunescapes project in the UK. There's a move towards encouraging more dynamic dune systems to get those early succession habitats... they're more important for plants too.

The Labour government have failed us on the Environment.

Dr Jon Millett @drjonmillett.bsky.social · 28/11/2024
Its an academic question though isn't it? It's interesting, but is it relevant? We are where we are. Rabbits were introduced, they created ecosystems that we value, myxomatosis wiped them out. So we have to decide if we still want those systems in the mix.
100
Dr Jon Millett @drjonmillett.bsky.social · 28/11/2024
Yes, I agree completely, it needs to be a mix, depending on objectives. Rewilding (or however close people can get to it) is awesome in the right place, but inappropriate in others.

Dr Jon Millett @drjonmillett.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
You'll loose Dune Tiger Beetles, Natterjack Toads, Marsh Helleborine, Petlewort, Grass of Parnassus, Variegated Horsetail etc etc etc. Human impacts have made active habitat management necessary in some/many circumstances.

Dr Jon Millett @drjonmillett.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
And how does 35 kg N/ha/Yr fit in with 'natural' processes?
000
Dr Jon Millett @drjonmillett.bsky.social · 27/11/2024
So we don't want to live in a world with species of early succession? Rewild UK sand dunes and you loose one of the rarest habitats in Europe and gain birch/alder scrub. You loose alpha diversity but more importantly the impacts on beta diversity could be huge.
