But there’s a difference between political pragmatism and abandoning principles, especially as a pediatrician. I wish she’d found a better balance. Jeffrey B. Benyacar @drjeffreyb.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Worse, after an intervention, the data generating process that defined the model changed! That distinction between predicting WHO returns and knowing what would prevent their return is huge. A variable can be highly predictive (if you're lucky) and utterly useless as an intervention target. 🫠 110
Jeffrey B. Benyacar @drjeffreyb.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I remember trying to predict SNF readmission and then divine which interventions would actually prevent it. The goal was simple: happier patients and lower costs. Prediction was hard enough. Identifying modifiable causes and effective interventions was a much harder causal problem. 110
Jeffrey B. Benyacar @drjeffreyb.bsky.social · 06/10/2026YES!!! In some ways, the greatest virtue of propensity scores is pedagogical: they force you to make explicit just how HEROIC the assumption of conditional exchangeability really is. Complex patients and clinician patient interactions are NOT vectors of a dozen neatly measured covariates. 110

Jeffrey B. Benyacar @drjeffreyb.bsky.social · 01/10/2026It's also interesting that anyone who has tried to write a really AIRTIGHT prompt discovers that natural language programming IS still programming. The bugs have just migrated from the code to the specification, no? 😁 220
Jeffrey B. Benyacar @drjeffreyb.bsky.social · 01/10/2026Very fair. Syntax I suppose is becoming cheap. The scarce skills are knowing what you actually want, specifying it precisely, and recognizing when the output is wrong. Natural language MAY remove a lot of friction, but I worry some may try to use it as a substitute for thinking. 110
Jeffrey B. Benyacar @drjeffreyb.bsky.social · 01/10/2026That distinction feels important: Abstraction removes the need to understand implementation details. It doesn't HOWEVER remove the need to understand the problem. I think my "hmmmmmmmmm" explains it perfectly. 💯 110
