An excerpt from the New Zealand Curriculum
Social Sciences Years 0–10 (specifically Year 8)

People can work with others to influence public attitudes,
values, and government decision-making by engaging with
MPs, writing submissions, signing petitions, creating public
campaigns, and participating in respectful protests on issues
such as social, environmental, economic, human rights, and
minority rights concerns. Examples include student groups,
trade unions, business associations, and social action groups,
for example:

- young people have opportunities to engage in interest groups
for change (e.g. Students Against Dangerous Driving and
Disability Rights Groups) and promote change in other ways
(e.g. Ngā Manu Kōrero, Student Volunteer Army, Pacific
Youth Leadership and Transformation (PYLAT))**
- the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions (NZCTU) makes
submissions on legislation, runs campaigns, publishes
research, and advocates for workers' interests
- national business associations (e.g. Chambers of Commerce,
BusinessNZ, Federated Farmers) influence government
decision-making by lobbying politicians, making submissions
on proposed laws, and using the media to promote policies
that support business growth and economic development
- the New Zealand Taxpayers' Union aims to influence
government spending through public campaigns, media
engagement, and direct lobbying
- the Polynesian Panthers formed in 1971 to challenge racism,
inequality, discriminatory policing, and immigration
enforcement facing Pacific peoples in New Zealand, including
the Dawn Raids

Businessman who secretly filmed Auckland women during sex and uploaded footage to sex sites jailed

Sex workers who were secretly filmed having sex with an Auckland businessman said he is a “pathetic little man” and has ruined their lives.

Shafkat Mahbub was charged with making 14 intimate visual recordings, 10 of which he posted online for money.

The businessman – who in April pleaded guilty to all 24 charges – appeared in the Auckland District Court on Tuesday and was sentenced to 31 months in prison.

Judge Debra Bell said that over a period of four years, Mahbub met with 14 women and covertly recorded sexual activity using a pre-concealed device and then uploaded the recordings on various websites.

He earned $3521.19 from uploading those recordings on one of the sites between August 2023 and March 31, 2024.

Despite the intent of the Social Media Minimum Age Act 2024 to delay access to social media platforms and reduce the potential for online harms, little evidence was found of immediate substantive reductions in reported social media use by adolescents under 16 years.

Police have acknowledged the sentence handed down to a former police officer who has been sentenced in the Hamilton District Court for historical sexual offending on Thursday.

Brian Denys McFarlane, 56, who had been found guilty of nine charges, has been sentenced to 9 years and 4 months' imprisonment.

At the time he applied to join the police, the offending had not been reported.

"We want to acknowledge the bravery and strength the victim has shown in speaking up and navigating this process," Waikato District Commander Superintendent Scott Gemmell said.

"While today's outcome provides accountability and holds the offender to account, we know it cannot undo the harm she has endured. Her courage has been instrumental in achieving this result, and we hope it contributes in some way to her ongoing journey."

A Dunedin entertainment industry figure who paid a 15-year-old for sex can now be identified.

Michael McLeod, the former owner of iconic Dunedin pub The Captain Cook Hotel, has been jailed for two years and three months for contracting the minor for sex.

While sentencing McLeod in the Dunedin District Court on Wednesday, Judge David Robinson described the victim as extraordinarily vulnerable.

Prosecutor Zoe Kellam said there was an element of grooming as McLeod gave the victim methamphetamine, alcohol and vapes.

Supplying the victim drugs made her vulnerable and formed an ongoing pattern of exploitation, increasing her dependence and reducing her inhibitions, she said.

McLeod, who was 40 at the time of the offending, previously admitted to supplying methamphetamine and cannabis.

A South Island father accessed thousands of child exploitation images and videos that showed "brutal violation of toddlers and infants".

According to the summary of facts, he downloaded numerous objectionable publications in the form of child sexual exploitation material (CSEM) through an internet file-sharing platform publicly available on the internet.

Michael Sullivan was sentenced in the Alexandra District Court in November 2025 to 12 months' home detention and 100 hours' community work on three representative charges of possessing objectionable material.
