finished mygo #bandori #bangdream #bangdream_mygo
finished mygo, I guess we could say.. it's my gone!!!!! sorry I've been sitting on this for a while I had to get it out

band shows are practically alien to me outside of bocchi the rock (which I started a few years ago and never finished, I think I was tired of it being too on-the-nose? can't remember), but in spite of that I liked mygo

I will admit most of the tension and interesting drama stemming from crychic and the mystery around it (at least not having watched any other bandori entry before mygo) was what hooked me most, but it's also just good to see how mygo's own members slowly manage to get on the same page after some extremely bad stumbles

the characters all have some pretty big flaws (at least for a while) and it's cool how that leads to nobody outshining the others, you can't really side with anyone in particular at first as they all keep making mistakes

honestly I think it's hard to find anything to bring up about the show, most of its value comes from the moment-to-moment character dynamics

overall I liked mygo, it's kind of mundane? but in a good way

and I'm continuing with ave mujica which I'm honestly more curious about (I'm totally not drawn to terrible tragedies)

finished symphogear G #symphogear #symphogearG
wrapped up symphogear G, starting and finishing shows so fast kinda rubs me the wrong way, even though I am following my 2eps/day routine as usual, maybe I should start doing 1ep/day for sub-20ep shows?

at any rate, G: weaker start than s1, the show takes weirdly long before it starts picking up in ep5, and considering
the highs it manages to hit around and after its midpoint, it almost feels like satelight put the most attention in crafting those setpieces while leaving the beginning and some of the rest kinda halfbaked

that said though, as I just hinted at, the closing episodes are definitely much better handled than s1, the pacing doesn't feel nearly as rushed and it's obvious the studio was looking forward to get to them

as far as the music goes I generally prefer s1, both in terms of op/ed and of returning characters' inserts (although I will say a certain new theme for hibiki/gungnir starts off SO good), whereas for the symphogear wielders they pretty much all have good songs, with shirabe/kirika's duet taking the cake from me

speaking of new characters, all with the exception of ver are cool.. after the plot finally allows them to be interesting several episodes in

ver on the other hand might be the worst villain ever in terms of both writing and how the show denies you the sight of his cold corpse no matter how much you desire for him to die over and over and over, he might genuinely be a detriment to G as a whole, that's how much I hate him

even though the kinda stuff that happens sometimes gets more fucked up than anything s1 had, G's tone feels brighter, guess an effect of the more polished artstyle? and well of the ed not featuring eerie carved up dolls in a black void

overall, G is fun you just gotta tank the first episodes to get to the good stuff (also I haven't watched the two special OVAs yet and I'll get around it later today or tomorrow, came across a clip of the first on bsky before starting s1 and I already know I wanna watch the rest)I will NOT be continuing with GX right away as I don't wanna make the same mistake I did with gundam where I start binging show after show of the same franchise until it all just stops hitting (as much) cause I've been watching the same thing for months on end

edit: I will also add that the hand of G's plot feels kinda forced at times to achieve the hype highs, s1 definitely had a more natural flow I think

symphogear s1 closing thoughts #symphogear
it's been a good while since I last watched an actually short show huh

so, symphogear s1: I had fun!! the plot may not particularly shine but the characters are fun, the action gets gurren lagann-grade ridiculous and maybe sometimes even beyond that, and the op/ed are awesome

the presentation is pretty cool, the op would lead you to expect a cheery and bright mood all across but, while this is no madoka magica, there's some darkness peppered around (hell ep1 literally kicks off that way)

putting aside the insane shit they do, most of the characters are just about fine, though some (ahem chris) definitely come across as far more interesting

I felt the show was at its peak around the middle (no doubt partly because chris was at the center of it), the last 2-3 episodes feel kinda carried by the off-the-scales hype moments

this feels really short for being a closing thoughts post but then again, symphogear IS short so go figure

can't tell yet if I'm going all the way to XV but I am absolutely continuing with G

I think people should wait a bit before making angry callout posts

artix switched its default display server to xlibre a while back and I can 100% see how people here would've made dramatic posts how artix has FAILED them and whatnot

..then a few months later artix reverted the display server back to xorg cause xlibre just sucked that bad

like, give situations time to develop before forming an unwavering opinion?
---
don't get me wrong I would be bugged if arch/artix repos suddenly allowed ai code (do they already? never cared enough to look) but that's hardly a reason to quit a distro you've trusted for years if not decades

a lot of this just comes across as performative

and so ends my 2nd gundam show, this time it's Turn A's.. turn

easily the best gundam entry I've watched thus far, for as much as it pains me to say it, zeta (let alone 0079) just doesn't hold up nearly as well

unlike with previous entries, presentation oddities are completely out of the window this time - great animation, very distinctive mobile suit designs, and finally great sound design that makes MSs FEEL heavy

the mobile suits here (with special exceptions I can't spoil) look very different both from each other and from anything the first couple gundam entries ever had, with common sights like WaDs and WaDoms outright trashing the humanoid silhouette for something entirely different¹
the Turn A gundam itself just looks awesome to me, the face has some weird appeal with the orange eyes, the crest-like feature on the head, the more dynamic shapes and all² (not to throw shade at more traditional gundams, the Turn A is just so different there's no direct comparison)
the pronounced textures on several mobile suits also look really cool, like the leg vents/thruster things on the Turn A and the extreme roughness of WaDoms' legs (Wodoms according to the wiki?)

production values aside, unlike the entries I watched prior to it, proper mobile suit battles not only take a long while to show up in Turn A, but they remain relatively uncommon (for most of the runtime at least) compared to 0079 and zeta, with characters getting far more attention instead

I've gone on several times about how I love most of the character designs here, they're a huge upgrade from differently colored spacesuits and they're also woven deep into the unusual steam-age setting of the show
the characters themselves feel more interesting, with even a few gimmick characters I originally dismissed as.. well, gimmicks, eventually redeeming themselves by actually having plot significance and just being fun to watch³instead of a "look at us we're evil" macrofaction, there's plenty of morally gray figures on both sides of the cast
I found that most of the time, instead of characters themselves being dis/agreeable it was their isolated viewpoints, it's nothing new from zeta but here it's a way more prevalent aspect⁴
the boundaries of every faction in Turn A, however big or small, are also extremely hazy and there's plenty of radical team-switching which is to be expected in the utter shitstorm that builds up as the story progresses

uncharacteristically for what I've seen of the franchise so far, the tone in Turn A is actually quite lighthearted a lot of the time, I appreciated that more than I'd expect

recently I heard about tomino expressing his disappointment with an apparently large swath of the gundam fandom who completely misses the anti-war message of the franchise, and.. while you definitely gotta be a little dense to miss them, I honestly kinda get it if people miss the hints in the first couple gundam entries, what with their huge focus on constant battles and far less morally ambiguous enemy factions

on the other hand, besides making battles less frequent, Turn A has a protagonist that doesn't just disagree with fighting like kamille in zeta, but who often actively resorts to less-lethal attacks (if any) and who repeatedly questions, be it in thought or out loud, why both sides don't just talk instead of killing each other, as much as that's an overly optimistic way of thinking

overall I feel like loran is a much better living and breathing pacifist message than 0079 or zeta as a whole shows/movies had ever been, and in general there's a lot more messaging of that type across earthers and moonrace alike

and much like zeta, Turn A periodically shows the consequences of war on the civilians of both sides, which at times works better here as there are quite a few characters in the cast who aren't fighters or other military personnelthe fewer battles in Turn A are much more entertaining to watch, partly due to most of them being set on the ground instead of in the vacuum of space, but also because attacks have serious impact and cause real damage this time, making the moment-to-moment action quite tense
battles also escalate pretty slowly across episodes, and it takes a long while for both factions to finally be evenly matched, so every time you see something new in the first 10 or so battles it really is exciting to see the bar get raised higher and higher

recontextualization of technology as mythology and viceversa is a recurring theme that runs deep throughout Turn A, I thought it's quite fitting in a timeline where earth isn't that technologically advanced yet
I loved how those legends were also leveraged to hint at future plot points without really showing you anything until much, MUCH later, it really hyped up what was to come as I approached the last 10 episodes⁵

as for critiques, I don't really have many? I guess there are a couple character designs that are overly out of place, and that loran is way too clueless at times, almost annoyingly so, but not much beyond that
if I had to name a petty issue I have with the show it'd be, surprise surprise, the length - while I think it uses those 50 episodes much better than zeta, it's still quite long for my standards, but this time I'd actually be hard-pressed to call out episodes that should've been cut, even the side-stories are that good

if you're looking to get into gundam without investing too much time on "context entries" you're not specifically interested in, Turn A seems to be one of the best (and most overshadowed???) places to start, and still offering plenty of fun even if you're already well into the franchise

oh yeah the openings start getting more typical but they're both good (the goofy TURN A, GUNDAM. announcer eventually grows on you as well), and the endings are 0079 trilogy-grade awesome

well, after almost a whole month of watching zeta, it's about time for my closing thoughts on it

I'll start by saying this is not one of those insane shows I'd recommend hands down with no strings attached, for two reasons

for one, it semi-depends on having watched 0079 first, and that's 50 episodes/3 movies of prelude, which is undeniably a lot; the second reason is zeta itself is pretty long for today's standards with its own 50 episodes, and I feel like it could've handled its runtime better

it's probably just a product of its time, but I believe if it rearranged certain events, removed some repetition¹ and simply cut to the chase on several subplots², zeta could've managed a shorter, but much better paced runtime which would've absolutely served it well

I really don't like admitting zeta isn't an awesome show because it IS awesome at its peak, it's just that I didn't feel it reach that peak very often³

now that the cons are out of the way, let's balance things out with the pros: the artwork and animation are a great step up from 0079, you can see the advancement in animation techniques, audio quality and overall polish

battles feel way better than 0079 too - maybe it's just cause I got used to the mobile suit designs, maybe for the slower pacing, but I didn't find action scenes to be confusing like in the original show/trilogy

in addition to that, there were many fights in unique contexts that really helped set them apart from the others⁴ and the mobile suits' designs are both far easier to take seriously
as they no longer look like plastic toys, and clearly more original in terms of design

the character cast is also great, most of them distinguish themselves well and kamille especially is a far better protagonist than amuro, imo (I expect pitchforks for saying this), acclaimed AEUG lieutenant Four Pussy is also part of the cast which automatically elevates the show to a higher levelthere are quite a few thought-provoking and important remarks peppered around⁵, and it's worth saying that the main antagonist faction also rings... some bells these days

since I have more to say but that's all spoilers, I'll put up a spoiler-ful, slightly deeper dive into some things down this post

I wish this post wasn't so negatively skewed, but zeta is one of those weird cases where I really like a show but I can't put my finger on what exactly makes it good to me, I guess this is one of those fabled cases of "better than the sum of its parts"

as someone completely new to the franchise, I absolutely recommend zeta (the show) as a follow-up to 0079; not the compilation movie/s cause I have no idea if they fuck up the pacing too much, also cause you'd miss out on the two great openings

no idea how much enjoyment you'd miss out on by watching zeta without 0079 cause going in without context would probably be quite overwhelming (especially considering I found it overwhelming AFTER watching 0079)

I also recommend waiting until after ep10 to start forming your opinions on zeta cause that's around where things start to pick up seriously

blah blah I hate character limits
watched cosmic princess kaguya cause my friend recommended it to me

given the "yuri movie" reputation, I feared I as a straight guy would've just been too far out of the target demographic I expected it to have but.. nope I think the movie is perfectly capable of standing on its legs even if you're not a girl into other girls

the production value is quite insane (then again I barely watch ultra-new shows so idk) and there are some scenes that really make it clear they couldn't have been done without new animation techniques, and I'm not talking mere eyecandy here but insane shots with the camera rotating in way too many directions to be able to realistically get good results out of it without a 3d reference

the music.. idk it's good I guess but the only song that was my kinda thing was the second one during the big concert and I quite liked that one

the plot is surprisingly absolutely fucking insane in the same manner as classics like terminator or the matrix, won't get into details but it's got some great out of the box thinking going on

and as far as the actual romance elements go? I found them to be not overbearing in the slightest regardless of how clearly they're presented, it's all really natural and it never once felt cheesy to me

overall yeah quite a good watch, don't be like me though and forget it's 2h30mins long instead of barely under 2h (I finished watching past 1am cause of that)

hello chat I started watching madoka magica #puellamagimadokamagica
just downed 4 pmmm eps, and yeah the presentation is VERY good, I really like the unconventional artstyles used in witches' barriers (the animation felt.. eh? in the first one with the collage-y theme, but it's definitely getting better with every new barrier)

the plot felt relatively chill at first, but after a couple eps you can start feeling the darker stuff creeping in

I also really appreciate how the characters aren't dumbasses and don't immediately do stupid things to speed up plot development

obviously I couldn't help but notice some similarities with - you guessed it - jjk, particularly the parallels you can draw between witch barriers and innate domains, grief seeds and cursed wombs and whatnot

hell a whole episode gives strong cursed womb arc vibes

anyway yeah I think this will be a really good watch

something something the char limit sucks #angelbeats
sooo I finished watching angel beats (the main 13 episodes at least, I'll take care of the OVAs soon enough)

the opinions I read before watching led me to expect it was more action heavy, which was very much not the case
still, I don't mean to say I liked it any less cause of it - I think it did a good job with its own set of characters and setting

speaking of characters.. maybe there are too many? a good amount of them only really serve for running gags and I feel like the main cast could easily be boiled down to some 3-4chars less
those characters' total lack of backstory (in the original episodes at least) makes them feel even more like little more than filler
though on that note, I'd rather take a handful of well-written backstories over 7 out of 10 really uninspired ones

one thing I couldn't really figure out was the intended tone the show wanted to set... on one hand, it kinda overuses humor that isn't that excellent to begin with, then again we're talking about something from 2010 so maybe it's just tropes that didn't age well; on the other, you got some really heavy topics going on in the character backstories
I think the show could've taken a more serious approach (considering the overarching theme of acceptance, it would've been fitting) but then again, I'm coming hot off jjk which was very much a show that took itself fairly seriously, so I'll just blame my incorrect expectations for angel beats

(1/3)going back to the opinions I had read before watching, idk what the people praising the action scenes to hell(heaven?) and back were on? there were maybe.. two action scenes that I really thought were very good?
I don't mean to say the other ones are bad or anything, but they are pretty much standard fare without praise nor blame

another common sentiment I've seen is that the show is too short: in a similar vein to what I said about backstories, I'd take a 13-episode set a thousand times over a longer show that runs out of gas and novel ideas by its midpoint
I think the original episodes were just the right amount to show the meat of the plot without leaving room for complete filler (and while also leaving a very noticeable aura of mystery around kanade in particular)
the fairly limited runtime also definitely helped keep things fresh nearly every episode, which I really appreciated

the music was another thing I've seen being given a lot of praise, I personally didn't find it all that incredible or novel, but it felt fitting + the opening definitely grew on me (as you'd expect)

overall, while not as incredible as people seem to have claimed, this has been a good watch! I feel like the short runtime makes the show quite recommendable - I finished the main episodes over the course of a week with a fairly relaxed pace, so even if it ends up not being your cup of tea it's not like you'll be left disappointed after investing a whole month or smth on it

miss me with fiddly threads caused by bs max character counts (has alt text)
the concept of profiles has become pretty common in mod managers and similar stuff (gmod presets...), but I think a much-needed evolution to that would be toggleable mod groups

in games like l4d2, gmod and payday 2 you often rack up a bunch of mods to fix game issues the devs couldn't be bothered with, and having to remember them all individually gets hard really fast; this obviously gets even worse when you start delving into content mods of different kinds

but if you had mod groups? you could just put all content mods of a certain kind under the same umbrella to be able to toggle them on/off in no time flat and without fearing to have forgotten one or two mods

not gonna bother with splitting this into a 10k post-thread
I actually love the sm64 personalization trope

I believe an experimental personalization ai is a much better excuse for unusual game behavior than "ooo game is haunted by a ghost"

a technical excuse like that also works better (on me at least) to create suspension of disbelief in the reader: while with a supposed haunting you almost instinctively go "yeah that's fake", with a for-the-time impossible but nowadays real technology you're just that tiny bit away from instinctively dismissing what you're reading and breaking your immersion

the concept of n64 roms found online just happening to not have the personalization ai built into them, while theoretically being VERY hard for it to happen, is just that tiiiny bit within the realm of possibility, again just barely not enough to instantly break your immersion

the takes on the personalization trope that involve the ai having a personality (stanley from sm64 classified) begin to cross that line where things start getting too cheeky, but if you don't think too much about it it's still an ignorable nitpick (the "ghost-haunted game" excuse would've actually been better for this specifically)

but as far as small, subjectively creepy changes to the game (white-eyed chain chomps, etc) go? or maybe additional castle floors with nonsensical layouts? that's pretty much remixing pre-existing content in the game, so I'd say it could be believable if you assume the personalization ai really exists

I finished reading touhou wild and horned hermit today, I figured I'd repost my closing thoughts here where there's a 1% chance of there being someone else who has read/is reading the manga picture with alt text because icba to make a gazillion-post long thread just for this #touhou
at last, we're finished

the last story arc was honestly surprisingly good for being a much more mystery focused thing (won't get any more specific for the sake of who hasn't read it yet) (probably the entire audience of this post), compared to the slice of life that is the rest of the manga (how did I read a slice of life for a month?????), I wish there were more chapters like that lol

and that's the vague expectation I'm gonna start reading forbidden scrollery with, apparently the premise is more about investigation so it might be more interesting across the board

still I don't wanna paint WaHH in a remotely uninteresting light, I found it pretty entertaining, especially thanks to a poster character as mysterious and interesting as kasen

compare to that miyoi from lotus eaters, and.. yeah I think kasen wins by a long shot

I dropped lotus eaters after like 7 or 8 chapters cause it just felt like barely anything was happening, and miyoi just isn't as captivating of a character as kasen and just generally fails at being a good reason to keep reading, imo

getting back to WaHH, another thing I REALLY loved was the full color pages at the beginning of every chapter, they never failed to look gorgeous with really pleasing color choices

anyway yeah, if you're into touhou I can recommend WaHH, it's a good read (even if you're not into slice of life apparently, going off of my experience)
