Anyway, if the game was as strong as its last third the whole way through I'd probably consider this Kyuuyaku II level As it stands though 20XX is a mostly harmless, frequently sloggy game featuring some fun fanservice and cool ideas it doesn't fully capitalise on

Not to mention the balancing is....... not brilliant There are several steep enemy level jumps in the game and you better be buying the most expensive guns whenever you can (plus charm bullets cus they're pretty busted lol)

20XX definitely suffers from the limitations of being a phone game though The lack of an overworld interconnecting these locations and the dungeons themselves being incredibly uninteresting for the most part (especially those later Virtual Battler ones fucking hell) really drag this one down.

You're able to draw clearer lines between the ending of SMT I and the beginning of II, with conspiracies and scientific developments which clearly lead to II's Messiah Project Also SMT II is often described as law-centric, and it's clear they wanted the opposite here given its premise and mc

What kept me going was the intrigue surrounding Ayin (the heroine) and the conflict between the Gaians and the Center. By the time of SMT II, the Gaians are pretty much done for until Lucifer intervenes (maybe Aleph too). Here, they're very much on the back foot but still have a resistance movement

Please be warned that this game is padded to HELL and back. 20XX's story is not paced well, setting up good intrigue in the beginning and then putting you through 4 or 5 pretty large dungeons with very little development in between - only to finally lock in during its last third

The answer to the question "should I play this" is pretty predictably "only if you're a massive Atlus nut and a huge SMT II fan" I didn't go into 20XX expecting it to be a hidden masterpiece to equal the original two SMT games, but it did deliver on being an interesting prequel side story

And so ends the tale of Chaosboy and Ayin, tripping so hard off power that they succumb to the devils within I do see the value in this ending and it's decently poignant but I'm a lot more interested in the others honestly (not enough to replay the game right now lmao)

Ok yeah so I was aware of this, apparently if you're on chaos route and Ayin tweaks out too many times you get this ending instead of any of the alignment ones. Bit of an anticlimax but at least it's pretty unique

It's actually pretty cool, an unfortunate amount of padding and some pretty trying dungeons but overall I'm glad I played this one fr. Excited to hopefully get Devil Colosseum too
