PNW residing collective of rabbits in a trenchcoat pretending to be a person with a job and rent and the rest of that crap. Clearly the live action role playing has gone too far. Fond of tea, beer, and the destruction of capitalism.

The problem with trying to talk about possible productive uses for AI is that you’re trying to advocate for the pleasant invigoration that a cup of coffee provides next to some tech bro who is snorting his third 8-ball of the morning and screaming incoherently about productivity maxing

One upside to weird xian sect bullshit in the 21st century is that some hapless pheasant in Flanders doesn’t have to put up with a bunch of assholes in metal haberdashery running rampant through their turnips to resolve who god loves more.

Also a good way to learn the limitations of AI assisted research. I tried asking an LLM for photographers who worked in the German Expressionist movement and was recommended a few. They were part of the New Objectivist movement which rejected expressionism. Mentioned together but not the same.

And that's not surprising, how many people get taught how to plan and execute a creative project. Especially when it's for yourself, not a client, just what you want.

So I think AI could work for those who can go through the process of going from an idea, sketching it out, building up the components, and then fighting with your tools until they spit out what you want. Which from what I've seen if very, very few people.

I've never been a good photographer because I don't know how to plan. I can do documentary style work well enough but not something that requires a vision, iterating through plans, and then making something happen so you get an acceptable fraction of your original idea.

I think the barrier for using generative AI for creative work is that when you turn the crank, it spits out a refined result. And that's where most people are going to stop. It's a pretty picture, what more do you want? Which is why everything looks like mall art. Looks nice but whatever.

"AI boosters see human beings as almost purely idealized, creative engines: prime movers in an increasingly technologized process. In reality, creativity is revealed in work and the toil of figuring things out... It is where creativity itself emerges."

But we have to live with the past and what it left for the living. In some cases, its fine art, in others, its a pile of shit delivered hot and fresh to your desk on Monday morning when you discover you're now the last person alive at your organization who has any hope of understanding the code.

In a way working with antiquated programming languages teaches you an important lesson in the study of history. People weren't stupid, they did the best with what they had and what they knew. And sometimes their best was not actually their best, they kinda phoned it in because of reasons.

We have zone permits in Seattle. You have to have a residence in the zone and you get to park there for as long as you like. Visitors have 2 hours then tickets and towing. It kinda sorta helps. I like Tokyo’s approach better. To buy a car you need to prove you have a parking spot.

I keep reading articles claiming that “the cost of code is approaching zero” due to AI code generators. Which as someone who works on a 15 year old app sounds like bullshit. You can spit out code quickly but does it work, will it continue to work and most importantly, can you change it later?

Since I've been getting really into my anamorphic lenses I've added a cheap video monitor (so I can see what the unsquished frame looks like) and camera cage which worked out quite well. What worked out less well was the variable ND filter. I now have fixed ND filters for next time.
