like what is this?? why is this???
a bad AI-generated cover for Percival Everett's THE TREES. Did you know it was a Dbodker Prize Finallist? Or that if you read the apparently-R'lyehian text at the top in the mirror, you might summon Percival's chthonic doppleganger, who has tentacles for arms?

right tree! (left tree has not yet started to shed its bounty) no real clue what these guys are — tastes like a sharper mcintosh but isn't a macoun, I don't think. Tidally-locked planet sharp gradient on all of them, on a 45* angle, red on top to green on bottom.
A selection of six apples, all of them knobbled and wild, all of them also red on the top left green on the bottom right— it's like a tidally-locked planet gradation. They're sitting on a granite countertop; my hand, in the bottom left, holds one of the apples.

The flesh inside is pale, doesn't brown super-fast. Skin is pretty tough; flesh tastes like a sharper macintosh but I don't think they're macouns.

The, ahem, classic "classically-lit-memes4u" hubris tumblr post edited to be all about the Natalie Portman / Rachel Cusk thing.

Top left corner, a tumblr icon circle (it's the eyes from the cover of LIFE OF M, Rachel Cusk's new novel) then text in bold that reads "cuskically-lit-memes4u"
Top right corner, the "click here for more" three dots

Text reads (in obviously overlaid/edited meme-style fonts) "RIP to Jonathan Safran Foer for his hubris but im different. and better. maybe even better than Jonathan Safran Foer

Really love this from @biblioracle.bsky.social's latest. If you don't like what you're reading, hit da bricks! For whatever reason! biblioracle.substack.com/p/refusing-s...
[HIGHLIGHTED] Now, despite carrying this attitude into my reading experiences, while reading I have had the question - I wonder if this is AI? - creep into my consciousness. When this happens I keep reading, if it persists and is interfering with the more meaningful pleasures, I stop reading and move on.

I don’t take the text to Pangram to check if my suspicions are correct. I stop. Whatever that text is giving me is not what I’m looking for. [END HIGHLIGHTED TEXT] There’s more than enough stuff to read in the world, so why spend my time on something that does not feel sufficiently human no matter its provenance?

For sure, I am likely triggering some internal false positives and what I’m reading is not AI prose, but lackluster or unengaging human writing, but so be it. Time to move on either way. It’s not that I’m eager to trust others, so much as I trust myself to know what is and isn’t worth my time.

super 'sclusie bookmark at Rough Draft this weekend, because somebody (😬) was a bit slow on re-ordering the regular ones... while supplies last! hand-cut! a silly goof!
on a faux wood-grain table, two bookmarks. on the left, the 'front' of the bookmark which has the ROUGH DRAFT BAR & BOOKS logo (that text over an open book). on the right, the 'back' of the bookmark which has a block of text that runs basically the whole thing and is a stream-of-consciousness dialogue ramble that I didn't copy-edit but seemed fun at the time.

So do we think Harper used AI on Jordan Harrison's cover or no? I know they're using AI on shit (I've already caught them and called them out on it, my rep is exhausted lol) — this one feels right on the line, but it's tripping my sensors and I want a second opinion.
a photo (or is it an illustration or is it both?) of a manor house with a fountain or something in front of it, but its all upside down so the sky (which is full of very impressionistic clouds) is at the bottom of the image with the chopped up text that reads MISS ARCHER, Jordan Harrison

Rough Draft in Kingston NY has got a few copies of (most of—the Norman Keene is still on its way) the 1993 Eden Book Society novellas from @deadinkbooks.bsky.social and holy moly are they beautiful. I've got my kickstarter pledge still coming, but I don't know if I can wait to read these....

I rather think I *will* continue to call them AI girlfriend weirdos, Stephen. It does not matter if it's 1 in 5 or 1 out of 2 of nearly everybody, it's still weird! If you have a romantic engagement with a bot, you're fucking weird!!
But his instinct toward humanism, admirable as it is, can lead to oversimplified generalizations about the technology itself. “Practically everyone who falls for the A.I. hype is dreaming of getting a human need fulfilled without having to extend moral consideration,” he writes. “That’s as true of the A.I. girlfriend weirdos as it is of the bosses hoping to use A.I. to replace half their workers and terrorize the remainder.” I’m not sure you can call them “A.I. girlfriend weirdos” when, by some estimates, one in five young adults in America have engaged romantically with A.I.

It's Prime Day every day at Rough Draft, if by "Prime Day" you mean "great day to pick up Muriel Spark's classic novel THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE" — don't buy your books at Amazon, buy them at your local indie bookstore or from bookshop dot org!! Today, tomorrow, always!!
On a faded wood picnic table sits a small stuffed giraffe with a ROUGH DRAFT BAR & BOOKS bandana. In its right hand, sorta, is a full cortado in a blue cup. Before them both sits the pastel pink Olive Edition of Muriel Spark's THE PRIME OF MISS JEAN BRODIE from Harper Perennial.

A Hell of a Tale

By Drew Broussard | June 13, 2026

Addie hurried through the still-foggy morning streets towards the harbor, following the thick brine on the air. She’d overslept, which was rare enough in a house full of noises like hers—but today, of all days! She gritted her teeth and hustled on.

Only when she turned the corner onto Dodson Street, with its falling slope and rolling cobble, did she allow herself to slow. She could see the quay now and, thankfully, she wasn’t so late as she’d feared. Only familiar faces, the same dedicated readers. She waved to Mrs. Henshaw, the washerwoman, who waved back and gestured that she was holding a spot for them both. Their camaraderie had grown strong over this print run.

“Morning, young Addie,” said Mr. Dischock as she came to his window. He always called her ‘young Addie,’ as though there was an older one to whom she was in constant comparison.

What on *earth* is The Public Theater's new design aesthetic? Could someone check in on Paula Scher, see how she's doing?
the season-announcement graphic for The Public Theater's 26-27 season, which looks like it takes inspo from the scratchy-text horror novel cover trend from several years back. It also looks like it was lazily dashed off on an iPad in 2014? It looks bad, is what I'm saying.

Coming to a bookstore near you: the Tender Hearts treatment! Replacing the Where'd-You-Go-Bernadette, for all your "smart, kooky, family-driven (pun intended) literary fiction" needs!
The cover of Adam Wilson's FAIL SONS: A NOVEL that features the title in big bubble letters over a broken-down U-haul scene with the flat, vaguely graphic-novel-ish (or maybe Tumblr-comic-ish) style that made THE ROAD TO TENDER HEARTS so instantly iconic on a bookshelf.

genuinely love seeing this kind of editorialization from The Guardian, hope to see more outlets following this lead and saying this shit loudly and clearly and often.
Trump then claims that the US has got “nothing out of Nato”, apart from protecting Europe from Russia.

[This is, frankly, offensive. Nato’s collective defence pledge, Article 5, has only been activated once, after 9/11].

If anybody has some money and a platform and wants to hire me to run a book club, I'm available! Might even be able to convince a man to read (gasp) a book about a woman solving a mystery!
It’s almost about what it doesn’t say. A lot of them are not a book for women, but they are a book about a woman rediscovering life after divorce. No thank you. Or there’s a whole genre of women solving mysteries where I was able to say, “No thank you.” But a lot of the books I’ve recommended are by female authors, and I would not say that my list is just books for guys. But they don’t hit that Lifetime Movie of the Week vibe.

One of my favorites of last year was The Safekeep about a lesbian romance. It’s one of the best books of the year. I wouldn’t say that’s a book for guys, but I wouldn’t say it’s a book for women either in the way that the women’s marketplace is a lot of romantic fantasy and romantic mystery — more of those buzzwords that make me stay away from a book.

Far be it from me to defend James Daunt but this headline is wildly misleading, since Daunt *in the article* says the following. It's surprising to me that the BBC would run such a clickbait-y headline but so it goes in 2025 I guess—but anyway, make this your quarterly reminder to READ THE ARTICLE.
In a wide-ranging interview with the BBC's Big Boss Interview podcast, Daunt said while Waterstones uses AI for logistics they currently try to keep AI-generated content out of the shops.

"As a bookseller, we sell what publishers publish, but I can say that instinctively that is something that we would recoil [from]," he said.

[HIGHLIGHTED]I could get up on a high horse and give you a million reasons why you should not ever, under any circumstances be doing this when it comes to the greater collective (theft of others work and effort and time, the fact that it depletes our natural resources). But I only need tell you that you are ruining your chance at creative happiness. It’s ruining your brain. I know this because it’s making you bleed joy.[END HIGHLIGHTING]

Your letter troubled me, friend. I worry that you have decided to just let go of all thought and let a computer think for you. That’s not what writing and passion and creativity is about. It’s not art. You do not need generative AI to give you story ideas. You do not need a robot to tell you whether your work is good. Only you can do that. Stop roadblocking your own writing life.

Perhaps the funniest moment in all of Trek, from STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME, when Scotty is told to use the computer and he starts talking to it, is instructed to use the mouse, and then he speaks into the mouse like it's a com unit. The guy helping them looks confused, while Bones looks patronizingly on at the old computer.

Just got a pitch for a 2026 title that has a pretty obviously AI generated cover. Sent this back to the publicist, in case anybody else wants to join me in saying no to such things.
As interesting as the book sounds, the fact that it has an obviously AI-generated cover means I not only have to pass, but feel compelled to write and tell you that that's why. It's an insult to the author, and to all the other authors, illustrators, and artists on the HC list, and I wish I could say I was shocked that it got past the initial design meeting let alone every successive conversation somebody had to have about it. I hope HC makes a different decision in the future, although I can't say I'm holding out hope.

Every year for the last idk how many, I've written a short piece of flash to accompany my annual October Country reading list (an assortment of eerie/spooky/strange/autumnal reads) — but I'm tired of emails, I'm even tired of most social media. So: www.drewbroussard.com/the-october-country
