a very cheesy image of a beach at sunset with Robert Frost's poem "Nothing gold can stay" (sorry if you made this and I called it cheesy, unless that's what you were going for in which case good job!)
Natures first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

*exceptional* Cab Franc typicity
2021 Cabernet Franc- Barrel Select - S9 This bottling shows exceptional Cab Franc typicity, with a whiff of tomato leaf on the nose, along with copious black cherry and raspberry fruit. There's definitely an oaky element to the bouquet here, with some charcoal and vanilla, but it has integrated well with the fruit as
the wine has aged.

As the historian David Austin Walsh makes clear in “Taking America Back: The Conservative Movement and the Far Right,” there is a degree of self-flattery in the old conventional wisdom that traditional conservatives successfully policed the borders of their movement in the past. Despite his influence, a figure like William F. Buckley Jr. could not actually expel people from the conservative movement or define “conservatism” to fully exclude people and groups that occupied the dark margins of American politics. “American conservatism,” Walsh writes, “resembled the fragmentation of the Protestant churches, with various factions and sects vying among themselves over who was ‘truly’ conservative.”

rereading this banger to prep for class today (where we're reading The Weirdest Saint's Life)
Jerome’s Centaur:
A Hyper-Icon of the Desert
Patricia Cox Miller
Although Jerome was ambivalent in his view of the desert, he nonetheless fashioned his portrait of the desert as a landscape charged with religious sensibilities, particularly regarding the ideals and dangers of the ascetic life. When placed in this context, Jerome’s introduction of a centaur into the desert in his Life of Saint Paul, the First Hermit can be seen not as a mere curiosity but rather as a pictorial image of Jerome’s view of the ascetic self. A hybrid figure, the centaur carries both idyllic and barbaric connotations and functions as a marker of a “wildness” that was fundamental to ascetic identity and also to the role of the desert in the development of Christian anthropology.

this one-paragraph summary of the first centuries of Christianity in Simon Yarrow's SAINTS: A VERY SHORT INTRODUCTION is not bad!
Sainthood took on its most familiar forms from the death of Jesus c. 33 CE to the decades following the Council of Chalcedon in 451 CE. At the beginning of this period, we might imagine Christianity as an inchoate, diffusely organized set of parallel experiments into the problem of how to live a good life, each working with a different mix of philosophical, religious, and linguistic heritages, but commonly inspired by a charismatic itinerant preacher and his disciples. Some of these experiments failed to take hold or continued along divergent paths, others were seen off by concerted attempts to build a church hierarcy that set boundaries in areas of belief and practice. By the end of the 4th century Christianity had forged a robust identity distinct from Judaism, and from various traditions of thought and practice designated heretical (for example Gnosticism and Donatism). Its newly closed canon of sacred texts, the Holy Bible, included the Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament) and a series of letters and biographies, parables and prophecies, poetry and revelation. It had attracted in large numbers the finest pagan intellects of the age and absorbed their learning, including Greek philosophy, Latin literary forms, and bodily practices. After suffering a period of intermittent persecution in the 2nd and 3rd centuries it secured political protection and vast material resources from Roman emperors and their imperial aristocracies, sufficient to established an institutional matrix spanning the whole of the Roman [empire].

open access!
This article examines the intersection of theological conceptions of Christ’s body, dietary practices, and the formation of a corporeal ethic in early Christianity, with special attention to the work of Clement of Alexandria. Through analysis of patristic texts, particularly the Valentinian fragment about Christ’s body preserved by Clement, the study reveals how ideas about the ideal body and dietary prescriptions were intertwined to create a model of Christian life that sought to reconcile bodily demands with spiritual aspirations. This article argues that Clement developed an original synthesis of contemporary medical ideas, philosophical concepts, and Christian theology, proposing a model of moderation and self-control accessible to believers in contrast to more extreme positions on continence.

fascinating bifurcation of "biblical history" from "world history" (note which one gets "Christianity" and which one gets "Judaism") in this promotion from the Museum o' the Bible about their Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit
This is biblical history.

The scrolls date back over two millennia, during the finalization of the Hebrew Bible and the emergence of Christianity. Among these ancient copies of Scripture is the creation account in Genesis 1 — the very first words of the Bible — plus the books of Psalms, Job, Isaiah, and more.

This is world history.

The collection also contains non-biblical documents and artifacts, offering a look at Judaism and daily life in Israel during the Second Temple period — the time of Jesus’s birth and of Roman rule.
