I can remember the exact year when I realised that 30 is not, in fact, old. 1994.

I was under the impression that these items (are they called "planning gain"?) mysteriously fell off the table in the latter 30% of the project timeline under the current framework?

Looks similar to HESCO Bastion developed in the UK in 1989 for flood and military use.

Is there a catch? A cold glass with hot liquid builds up stresses owing to expansion, but ice warming from 0C to 4C would actually contract, but would become water - so crack progression and stresses are different aren't they? I guess operating at -15C to 0C ice behaves like glass.

How do you find it? Was it satisfying, or just a relief when it was over?

Don't forget the distance. I visualise the sandwiches in my local supermarket being put together in a metal shed in Leicester and being shipped 3 hours by road at 4am.

Have you experienced 'team' writing, such as a screenplay?

This is true of copywriting (ad copy, marketing copy, press releases as well). As some say, don't wait for motivation, motivation comes with the action. Sigh. I wish that were more true of me 🙂

I feel bagatelle is underused by a certain demography (I looked it up when Ian Richardson used it in Private Schultz, in which he played a person of a certain demography).

Red or white I imagine it would be obvious the vehicle had a tough life. RyanAir used to do this - while easyJet had theirs painted a lovely orange, RyanAir saved a few pennies and kept the mass-produced white. Lots to dislike about that company, but can't fault that decision.

The carriers (email services, phone, mail) can do a load more to help, but their bandwidth model disincentivizes them. Nice words and voluntary codes don't cut it, but try and introduce regulation and it's seen as govt overreach.

Think simpler. If you have a <thing> registered <n> years ago, in <a> area then you can do a non-AI sift to plot a demographic attack. For example, if you registered an email 30 years ago, you can guesstimate that by now you'd be interested in SS payments or diabetic meds.

He was part of a cabinet which introduced austerity, and part of a cabinet which thought that resolving an internal rift in the Tory party was by having an advisory referendum, which didn't satisfy the usual requirements of a proper referendum but was still enacted upon. Responsible much?

How much is a burner phone in 2026? A few bucks? My work phone used to be an old Nokia hand me down. It still had the previous keeper's golf club number in it.

How is it done elsewhere? A Constitutional convention? In and of itself a referendum with multiple options of voting systems would be about the most meta moment of the UK's history since the 1600s.

Enjoyed it, and I notice you are sticking to your existing position that getting the basics right is still very necessary, as there is still much to do (particularly in OT).

I think there are several quotes along the lines of "A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit". In particular I think there's one about gardeners planning avenues they will never see.

Could QA of the hardware improve over the product lifetime? Early h/w had a more conservative power/performance envelope than later versions. I'm particularly thinking of processor chips which usually exhibit significant improvements quite quickly.

Rubbish. Commercial companies have infinitely bigger resources to influence bad behaviours than health authorities and individuals to influence good behaviours. Meta have just been fined $18bn for what? Some words? Come back when when health PSAa match vape/tobacco advertising dollar for dollar.

OK, so is there a summary of the relationship between user and system that differs in regular IT - for instance who is serving/supporting who? (I'm trying to drag out some ideas, not trolling)

Most UK education is not about education as Sir Ken said but about resilience, right up to undergraduate level. Along the way, if you obtain a love of learning, you've done moderately well. Success would be judged if you found your "thing". I'm still looking. The purpose of a system is what it does.

at least something for staying at school until 16. We might learn something by asking those who did score very low in those terms before and after the introduction of GCSEs whether with the hindsight of a decade or two whether having a few more exams was better or not.

There is a context that does not seem to be mentioned much, if at all in Mr Dunt's piece or the comments, which is that at the time of GCSE's introduction average exam educational attainment in the UK was an international scandal. If you failed O Levels you got nothing, and GCSEs gave scope to award

Stories like this make me wonder what the engineering equivalent might be in civil engineering or product design and whether such a big philosophical or methodology gap is inevitable or not.

drewizard.bsky.social @drewizard.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
Yup - good point. We agree on the post, but I don't want to consider DEI as EDI as transatlantic equivalents. Looks like much of the internet disagrees with me - either I have to read more, or agree to disagree. A difference in emphasis based on the orders of letters in an acronym seems lame to me.
100
drewizard.bsky.social @drewizard.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
Not a bad point, because I have not had DEI training, but it is also a good point to highlight important differences between the two. Drawing an immediate equivalence is unhelpful in my view - if you feel you can, then at least explain a qualified equivalence.
101
drewizard.bsky.social @drewizard.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
It's not equivalent. EDI training focuses on protecting a company from litigation regarding protected characteristics according to the Act. DEI is a framework to guide policies. For instance, even if a business in the UK wanted to introduce quotas, most of the time this would be illegal.

Sadly the average copper doesn't know electoral law well enough to spot infractions such as harassment or secrecy. Many years ago I saw the far right gathered to gently accost voters in east London. Our democracy is based on trust and gentlemenly conduct. We have to vigorously defend it.
