It's rare that a movie really gets my pulse pounding on @genrevision.com, but the scene in BODY SNATCHERS where Meg Tilly gets her unforgettable monologue is like a hypodermic needle of adrenaline right through the sternum. It got all my internal klaxons screaming, lights flashing. Incredible.

After five episodes, my harshest drag on CARRIE (2026) is that it's a TV show, and some unavoidable elements of that storytelling format are making this thoughtful and provocative iteration feel drawn out, extraneous, or incongruent. It's lazy criticism but I bet I'd like this way more as a film.

"Inside the Closet" is the mascot episode of TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE. Penned by the brilliant Michael McDowell, sharply directed by Tom Savini, led by icon Fritz Weaver, and crafts a truly scary monster. I could gush forever about this episode. An anthology horror necessity. 👍

Look at how many good and/or well liked actors wind up doing Harry Potter or Daily Wire shit. That should tell you something about the mercenary nature of (most) actors, and how actively they seek employment. Even famous actors are so scared to never work again that they’ll do damn near anything.

"Slippage" is another TWILIGHT ZONE type tale about a guy who is slowly being erased from existence. It's nice having David Patrick Kelly around and it's not without some decent thematic weight, but it's still a poor imitation of its inspirations. 👎

"The Odds" is a much better TWILIGHT ZONE riff. It's a single location episode made grand thanks to Danny Aiello and Tom Noonan. Watching two top-tier actors sweat it out is what this kind of TV is about. Simple, small, and a standout in Season 1. 👍

"Pain Killer" is a decent "take my wife, please!" comedy that ramps itself up towards the end and then cuts off just as a big payoff is promised. Middle of the road as a story but it looks pretty sharp since the director of photography was Ernest Dickerson! 👍

Now we're back on that EC-inspired goodness. "I'll Give You a Million" sees two rich assholes (fun turns from Keenan Wynn and George Petrie) get their comeuppance after one buys the other's soul. We get a ghoulish ghost, a gay stage magician Satan, and a perfect final image. What's not to love? 👍

Maybe I'll make this an episode review thread for TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE! A huge downgrade from the pilot, "The New Man" is an odd sub-TWILIGHT ZONE tale about systemic pressures as filtered through alcoholism and a mysterious kid. Props to Vic Tayback for anchoring it like a playhouse pro, but 👎

A glaring omission in my love of anthology horror is finishing TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE. Started it years ago and dropped off. No better time to restart, especially with such a great Halloween pilot. Written by George Romero and directed by Bob Balaban, you should watch "Trick or Treat".
