From an evolutionary perspective, maybe dream amnesia serves an adaptive function, preventing us from confusing dreamed experiences with actual events encountered during wakefulness? In particular in our social life, it's quite important to tell dreamed interactions apart from real ones. (2/3)

Martin Dresler @dresler.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
Why do we forget our dreams? Dreams are the kind of experiences that in principle should stick well in memory: emotional and often bizarre. If we would encounter typical dream content during wakefulness, we would likely never forget it. Yet, we forget most dreams soon after awakening. (1/3)

The recent changes didn't change 1) or 2), but improved 3) by reducing the applicant pool. A simple and reasonable strategy for improvement would be a proper 2-step application, with minimal effort in the 1st step, and a massively reduced applicant pool in the 2nd step.

This drives the time and effort arms race for grant applications that led to the current situation. Importantly, the bottleneck / cost driver in the funding game is not so much reviewer effort, but applicant effort: www.nature.com/articles/s41... onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

Peer review for grant applications serves a fundamentally different role than for publications: ensuring a certain absolute level of quality/robustness with (in principle) unlimited ‘winners’ in case of publications, vs. producing a relative ranking in a zero-sum game in case of grant applications.
130
Martin Dresler @dresler.bsky.social · 16/04/2026
If AI plays a noteworthy role in grant review, the rational strategy would be to optimize one's proposal for the known/expected AI model upfront. Realistically, this requires automatization via AI as well, increasingly taking humans out of the loop on both sides of the application process.
