I trust them with my life as I step into the airplane. Pilots have gone through rigorous training. I don’t claim to know better than them. I trust them. I have chosen my surgeon. Even as a surgeon I don’t scrutinise their technique.

Once I have chosen the restaurant, I don’t scrutinise the chef over the ingredients and cooking technique. I trust what goes into my body has been carefully prepared. Once I have chosen the airline, I don’t tell the pilot how they should fly their plane.

In the last decade there have been 2 major head and neck cancer staging changes, one in oropharyngeal SCC and this one for salivary gland malignancies. This helps many patients to receive better tailored therapy and prognosticate their long term journey.

This year the staging system has been modified to incorporate the unique behaviour of rare salivary gland cancers, incorporating major and minor salivary glands, and the number of neck nodes affected.

Salivary gland cancer remains a challenging disease to treat because there are more than 20 distinct malignancies that arise from them. The old TNM staging system is an extrapolation from SCC staging.

In day-to-day practice, often a life of expertise and experience is pitted against 10 minutes of ChatGPT research. “Research” means different things to different people.
