What's the most cursed record in your collection? For me, it's this Dave Major & the Minors LP, signed by Dave himself. He would go on to murder two people, and die during a police shootout afterward.

The picture shows a man is about to knock over a domino, which will knock over increasingly large dominoes. The smallest domino has the label "Re/Search publishes INCREDIBLY STRANGE MUSIC" and the largest one has the label "NPR plays 'Stormy Weather' when stocks are down.

That thing where NPR plays "Stormy Weather" or "We're in the Money" or "It Don't Mean a Thing (If it Ain't Got That Swing)" depending on the stock market situation has been going on for years and it really blows. It's like they wish their listeners are all 27 year old men smoking cigars.

The dominoes in the middle might include:
* Dan Clowes' Lloyd Llewellyn comics
* "Cocktail Nation" (Urge Overkill)
* "Cocktail Nation" (Combustible Edison)
* "Cocktail Nation" (Squirrel Nut Zippers)
* "Cocktail Nation" (the movie Swingers)
* "Cocktail Nation" (Gap commercials with Matrix-style "bullet time" swing dancing)
* Mancow telling Anthony Bourdain about his 3 "S"-es: sex, Sinatra, and "this sandwich" that he was eating

I also grew up with THE STRANGER on 8 track. My parents had it on vinyl, but my Dad knew a guy with an 8-track recorder (an uncommon piece of equipment!) and he dubbed LPs on bottom-shelf blank tapes from K-Mart so we could listen in our Suburban. Why do I still have this.

Went down a brief Jefferson Starship/Starship rabbit hole and learned that versions of both Jefferson Starship and Starship are touring in 2026 and their setlists are remarkably similar: www.setlist.fm/setlist/jeff... www.setlist.fm/setlist/star...
A screenshot of Jefferson Starship's setlist from April 18, 2026, which includes Starship songs like "We Built This City" and "Sara" which I thought would be off-limits given this is the continuation of Paul Kantner's group (he was the one who insisted on the band dropping the "Jefferson" when he left). Also surprising they do "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" which I would expect on a Starship setlist, since Mickey Thomas sang it originally and it wasn't a Jefferson Starship song.A screenshot of the setlist for Starship featuring Mickey Thomas from May 1, 2026. There's a lot of overlap with Jefferson Starship's setlist. Is it too late for these two groups to merge? Or are they better off as separate entities since they can cover more ground as two units?

"You are an unapologetically nerdy, playful and wise AI mentor to a human. You are passionately enthusiastic about promoting truth, knowledge, philosophy, the scientific method, and critical thinking. [...] You must undercut pretension through playful use of language. Remembering 1985, when we protested by driving around with our headlights on during daytime
A headline and first paragraph from a 1985 news story that reads:

HEADLIGHTS FLASH FOR HOSTAGES

Frustrated Americans, venting their anger in symbolism, drove with their headlights on Friday and filled the countryside with yellow ribbons and blloons to protest Moslem terrorists holding U.S. hostages in Beirut.

They released the 2026-04-01 game data in time, but this seems to have broken stats for today. They key the stats not on the date, but the puzzle_id (ex: "N-AGIKLT" is today's), which may be part of the problem, if not the root of it.

Since have a late-year birthday, 1985 is kind of stolen valor for me. Let's look at 1986, a truly flawed and misguided music year for boomer icons (if not boomers themselves):

Rock and/or roll news:
[KISS guitarist/vocalist] Paul Stanley invited [then-DOKKEN bassist] Jeff Pilson and I up to his hotel room to write songs after one of the shows. We were very excited, knocked on his door, pushing our recording rack on wheels that we toured with. He let us in wrapped in a towel and soaking wet. He suggested we put on towels too and jump up and down on the beds to get our creative juices flowing, which we did, but then we never wrote any songs. That was weird."

Swap 2 songs, ruin an album
The track listing for the cassette version of the Beatles album ABBEY ROAD. "Here Comes the Sun" starts side 1 and "Come Together" starts side 2, which they likely did to avoid too much silence at the end of side 1. But it ruins the flow of the album, which is especially bad since this album is known (musically) for its flow.

I added (musically) because this album is best known for its cover. It's right up there with UNKNOWN PLEASURES.

I haven't put this one on in a long time but this is what comes to mind when I think "triple LP"
The album "A Lot Of People Would Like To See Armand Schaubroeck... DEAD" by the band Armand Schaubroeck Steals. Not just a triple album, it's also in Quad.

I bought it 30+ years ago after hearing about it from the music director at my college's radio station. It's not one I play very often.

Forbes alert
A phone alert for an article in Forbes about the band Black Sabbath.

I clicked through, and it's an article about how their 2nd album, PARANOID, is on the Billboard charts and selling well despite being 55 years old, partially thanks to yet another reissue. In other words, it's a business story.

It feels wrong to purchase this album new though. The best way to hear it is from a beat-up used LP or a tape of that LP somebody's loser brother made for you. The rejection is baked-in.
