Black history doesn’t belong here. It only visits. That’s what schools risk saying when October’s posters come down and the learning stops. This is belonging debt: the cost of belonging deferred. Black history belongs in our curriculum all year. So do the people making it.

School Improvement Done Differently. Ignore belonging and it doesn't sit still, it builds debt. I call it BelongingDebt. Staff and students must feel Visible, Valued, Respected, Represented and Connected - this resurfaces as attainment gaps, turnover, unexplained behaviour data. #BelongingDebt

Results Day: Look beyond the grades. Who felt Visible, Valued and Respected? Who saw themselves Represented in success? Who was Connected to an adult who believed in them? Ask the same of those who thrived. Results tell us how pupils performed. They should also make us ask how well they belonged.

INclusion is not just inclusion as we know it. It is about being IN. When I write about INclusion, I’m not talking about policies or programmes. I’m talking about people feeling IN. INclusion is not just about access. It’s about recognition, participation, contribution and connection.

The Belonging Debt Problem in Schools! Belonging Debt is the accumulated gap between a school’s promise of belonging and people’s lived experience of it. The debt builds quietly. And too often, it is paid for by the person thrown under the bus.
