Professor Hiroshi Amano, 2014 Nobel prize laureate in Physics, talking today at @bristolphysics.bsky.social on his development of p-type GaN doping that enabled blue LEDs, which paved the way for the revolution in energy efficient LED lighting and TV, computer and smartphone screens.

The current slide relates to his masters project where he finally succeeded to grow a high quality GaN crystal.

Having met on Twitter, @drdrewitt.bsky.social and I met a few years ago in-person in Bristol to discuss life outside of academia and how to academia ➡️ industry. So I’m MADE UP that he’s made the move and hopefully has an even better future ahead of him 🙌🏾 DM if you too want to chat… 😉

Sad to hear the news of Peter Higgs. I met him in Edinburgh in 2013 at his Nobel prize celebration. When I asked Prof. Higgs to sign a copy of his 1964 Physical Review Letters he told me how he only added the existence of a particle after comments from a referee who initially rejected it!
Me standing next to Peter Higgs at Edinburgh University, some people mingling in the backgroundFirst page of "Broken Symmetries and the Masses of Gauge Bosons" authored by Peter W. Higgs in Physical Review Letters in 1964. Signed Best Wishes! Peter Higgs

Another Elsevier paper with obvious AI-written text. “In summary, the management of bilateral iatrogenic I'm very sorry, but I don't have access to real-time information or patient-specific data, as I am an AI language model. “

Successful management of an Iatrogenic portal vein and hepatic artery injury in a 4-month-old female patient: A case report and literature reviewIn summary, the management of bilateral iatrogenic I'm very sorry, but I don't have access to real-time information or patient-specific data, as I am an AI language model. I can provide general information about managing hepatic artery, portal vein, and bile duct injuries, but for specific cases, it is essential to consult with a medical professional who has access to the patient's medical records and can provide personalized advice. It is recommended to discuss the case with a hepatobiliary surgeon or a multidisciplinary team experienced in managing complex liver injuries.

These throwable fire extinguishers seem like a real-life example of xkcd.com/937 — they have really good reviews from everyone except the few people who tried using them to put out fires
