MA voters- important questions on the ballot. 3 (No), 4(yes), 7(yes). I donot want a combined primaries ballot. Yes, to Election Day voter reg. We have a big youth base. This is good for them. Yes to affordable housing. I have no thoughts on Marijuana use. I will do whatever the young people want.

A very good episode on Curious by Nature podcast on what happens when people aren’t able to participate in politics. When voters exit then democracy dies. Listen wherever you get podcasts. This is so cool. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c...

For my fellow #orangetheory enthusiasts I wrote about the impending closure of our #otf studio and what it means to me. I am glad to reference Putnam whenever possible. I hope we can save OTF even if not I am glad to have had this community. theswellesleyreport.com/2026/09/an-o...

Rest in peace, Jason. May his tormentors never know peace. Jason was hounded. When black academics or professionals fail the punishment never matches the crime. He was hounded. This morning I was just reading a really awful email from @wellesley.edu encouraging me to look forward & no apology.

I will always miss old twitter because I am an Africanist and for non American communities Twitter was amazing. The massive exodus really hurt things. Still, this is the BlueSky wall paper. Ain’t it beautiful and gentle?

In the 2003 state of the union address president Bush made two announcements that would go on to impact the world in radically different ways. 1. The war in Iraq 2. $15 billion to fight AIDS. I am spending my summer collecting data on the impact of the second. I am in awe!

Not one person working in an academic constitution should struggle to make ends meet. Academic parents shouldn’t have to decide between rent and childcare.

People are worried about gerrymandering. Rightfully so but it’s not hopeless. The map is Trump friendly but necessarily R friendly so split R is good for D. I am being very optimistic. It’s the only way to survive. Curious to know what others think. centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/...

What is at stake in the midterms? Senate Dems need to hold on to every seat then flip 4. The 4 possible TX, NV, ME, phew House Dems only need to flip 3. How are things looking over in SC, up state NY? Just 3. It’s a numbers and unity game. We can’t be in our feelings.

drdendere.bsky.social @drdendere.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
6,000 people in Nevada seriously said not today. I have to look at their ballot design 😂kidding aside this is another strong showing (numbers) by Dems. It will be a very close race. If the 6k choose one of these people and if dems can get R defectors then chances are strong.
000
drdendere.bsky.social @drdendere.bsky.social · 10/06/2026
Dems did sooo good in SC. Johnson has almost has many votes as the top 2 R. Republicans are good at uniting after primaries (see TX) but Dems should run with the intention to flip. South Carolina is def in play by the numbers, even if we don’t win senate. Momentum 💜 GO, SC. Cry harder #5😭😭😭😂😂😂

Really good turnout by DEMs in Maine. Democrats will be fine if only if they can keep up the good turnout. Suppressed turnout is not good for challengers. There are about 300k reg democrats in ME. Almost 200k voted in the senate primary with over half of them choosing Platner.

Democrats will need at least 1.5 million votes to flip Texas. Look at the votes for the railroad commissioner race. Railroads not about trains but about oil. Oil is everything in Texas. Bo French ran a culture war to “protect oil from sharia law” what now? Indeed. Good luck to us all.
000
drdendere.bsky.social @drdendere.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
Some dems are hopeful that we can flip Texas. I am cautious. Can Dems + left turnout a million people? And, at what point will a Dem voter switch to Republican? Ask the same question the other way. In a polarized state switches are really hard and rare. Would you vote MAGA? If no, then there you go.

The weaponization of various civil rights protections against black folks is heartbreaking. What’s worse to me is progressive folks whose first thoughts are that 44 black med students at Yale out of over 500 is a black advantage. Or that 9 tenured blacks is an advantage. The foolishness of it all.

People are talking about Winnie Mandela and the collective efforts of women in the struggle against Apartheid. Here is a little bit of history from @wellesley.edu. More than 200 students gathered to protest apartheid. 43 arrested. When asked their names each one said, “Winnie Mandela”. The power!

Our fav time of the year :) grading the Africa map quiz. My students know that Ghana does not border Nigeria (common misconception & why it is so). That Sudan/Egypt border makes little sense - colonialism This year - most folks refused a word bank!!! Happy Map Quiz Day

Fellow academics, What can journal editors say or do to encourage you to accept review requests. If we don’t get reviewers then we can’t respond to authors quickly which means people’s work is in limbo 😭😭😭

Dear @economist.com , as a leading scholar on exit your assessment is wrong. Westerners leaving in droves is not good for the democracy in their countries. In my new book death, diversion and departure I explain why. Yes, a theory drawn from African data is broadly applicable.

Voter Exit is a type of privilege A friend shared a reel of celebrities who are COMPLETELY done with USA 🇺🇸 & now LEAVING. Elites choosing to leave are participating in self exile. My new book explains that when voters are forced to leave it hurts democracy. www.instagram.com/reel/DUBhpFd...

My book is here. In the book I argue that when voters exit (they don’t vote or can’t vote) then democracy dies. When the people’s voice is silenced democracy dies. Authoritarian regimes benefit from voter exit. (I am not an influencer so not good at videos).
