I got it from Watson's biography of Descartes (p.32). But having re-read it, it's insinuated rather than directly stated. What's clear is that people were burned during this time, but whether or not it was for specifically transgressing this rule, or just being 'heretical', is unclear. Good point!

In 1624, the French government passed a law forbidding any criticism of the works of Aristotle. More than a dozen people were burned at the stake for transgressing this rule. It's ironic, really. Aristotle would surely have been appalled.

The disdain with which Parfit sometimes dismisses critics is stunning. On p.354 he gets rid of one objection by saying: “This view is too implausible to be worth discussing”. What a great line. I intend to use it next time I’m having an argument with my wife. I’ll let you know how that goes…
