Enjoying Mike Flanagan's adaptation of @stephenking's Carrie. My sixteen year old was noting that, since it was set in the present day, it should have been called Carreigh 🤌

I don't know much about football. but this is some of the best writing I've read in a while. It's about the rivalry, loss, memory, and change. By Wright Thompson. #collegefootball www.espn.com/college-foot...

Thompson: LSU-Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin and an old fight made new
The LSU-Ole Miss rivalry is long, with two fanbases deeply intertwined. The line between love and hate is thin, and Lane Kiffin's return brings those memories to the surface.

Meta Just Agreed to Stop Waking Your Teenager Up. Don't Wait for It.
On August 26th, Meta reached a settlement with 47 states, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories regarding allegations that its products have harmed children and teenagers. Meta will pay...

In other words, apparently 10 PM–7 AM is a reasonable time to protect teenagers' sleep, as long as everybody else has to do it too.
100 1
Craig Canapari MD @drcraigcanapari.com · 01/09/2026
Perhaps the most breathtakingly cynical part of the settlement is this: Meta has agreed that the nighttime feed blackout will expand from midnight–6 AM to 10 PM–7 AM — but only if major competitors including Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube agree to comparable protections.

How good are you at not picking up your phone when it's in your pocket or sitting on your desk? Honestly, I struggle with it. Your teenagers may struggle even more.

I've had parents who've really struggled with their teens' social media use who've actually gotten safes or locked their kid's phone in their car.

A large JAMA Pediatrics systematic review and meta-analysis found associations not only with bedtime device use, but even with simply having access to a device at bedtime. jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...

Use of Screen-Based Media Devices and Sleep Outcomes
This systematic review and meta-analysis examines whether there is an association between use of cell phones and tablet devices in the sleep environment and sleep outcomes in children and adolescents.

Craig Canapari MD @drcraigcanapari.com · 01/09/2026
And there is evidence supporting this approach: bedroom access to phones and other portable media devices is associated with shorter sleep, poorer sleep quality, and greater daytime sleepiness.

Craig Canapari MD @drcraigcanapari.com · 01/09/2026
I would not rely on your teen's willpower to keep them from using their cell phones at night. You need to have custody of the phones. How good are you at not picking up your phone when it's in your pocket? Honestly, I struggle with it. Your teenagers may struggle even more.

Craig Canapari MD @drcraigcanapari.com · 01/09/2026
Teenagers need a sleep opportunity that allows for the recommended 8–10 hours of sleep per night. If the blackout is only midnight–6 AM, that allows only six hours of sleep.

Craig Canapari MD @drcraigcanapari.com · 01/09/2026
Although I think this is a step in the right direction, I really would not recommend that parents or teens rely on the goodwill of tech companies and their oligarch owners to keep them safe or help them sleep well.

Craig Canapari MD @drcraigcanapari.com · 01/09/2026
Two changes are specifically relevant to sleep health. The first is a nighttime block restricting access to feeds between midnight and 6 AM. The second is turning off notifications between 10 PM and 7 AM.

Meta will pay at least $12.1 billion and potentially up to $17.1 billion over the next decade. That is a lot of money for most of us, but not particularly a lot for Meta.

You can't fix a summer sleep schedule the night before school starts. I can't tell you how often I see teens in July and August who are sleeping until noon — and who are going to have to be up six hours earlier in a few weeks. #backtoschool

FWIW I have one kid in college in the states and another likely to go here that are cheaper (but obviously not European cheap). State schools, schools that give generous merit aid. They will not be the reach schools.

We were just in France and our American tour guide had gone to college for $250/year. I have a friend whose daughter is doing a 6 year degree (MD) starting out of high school. The annual cost is not that different from here (but it’s six years vs eight)

What’s your take on this Stephen? $23 a month may make sense when compared to cost of a new phone if you upgrade every few years. I haven’t done the math with my current usage patterns ( keeping a phone for 3-4 years or more). Leasing a computer seems crazy though given how long Macs seem to last

This is happening everywhere for lots of things that our parents (me- Gen X; parents on Silent Generation /Boomer cusp) took for granted. What I especially like is the focus on solutions— finding new non corporate ways to find and share joy for everyone.

Now the same trip (with all the different layers of fast passes etc) would be practically out of reach. Which is fine for us but makes me sad for parents of young kids who are not wealthy.
