This is a disaster. The ethics committee in Denmark that approved the Guinea-Bissau study which will withhold the birth dose of HepB vaccine “had never considered medical studies before but it changed the rules in order to vote on this one”. Four members of the committee have resigned in protest.

Cardinal Cupich: “For Chrysostom, the altar inside the church and the ‘altar’ of the marginalized person on the street were two aspects of the exact same reality. To bow before the consecrated Host while being indifferent to the stranger is a fundamental breakdown of eucharistic logic.”

1. Ecclesiology is an extension of Christology. 2. The social doctrine of the Catholic Church as taught by the popes is firmly rooted in Chalcedonian Christology and the Nicene profession of faith. 3. So too is the entirety of the teaching of Second Vatican Council.

I saw an opera performed in St Paul Inside the Walls (Anglican) in Rome and it was beautiful. Plenty of Churches, including Catholic churches host music concerts - for a bishop who seems to value art&culture this really feels like he wants to gatekeep what music counts as acceptable 🤷‍♀️

& also as an ethicist, we live in a world where “war on…” culture in the US, largely thanks to expressed Christians has made the world far more violent & dangerous for those on the margins….I do think that alongside modern weapons is cultural lens of war Leo focusing on a lot.

Whereas I want to grapple with the past to understand it in its context & what it may teach us today…but without a need to rescue for current use their categories. Some remain helpful, some should stay in their historical context.

I also don’t think examining monastic literature in its context & being really careful abt what it does & doesnt mean for today means abandoning the literature…abandoning a metaphor doesn’t necessarily mean abandoning monastic lessons.

For ex: you & I deeply agree on what Mary’s response to 1yr old asylum seeker story posted yesterday. I very much argue as an ethicist this is a matter of good vs evil & we are called to take sides. But “warrior queen” & similar inherently violent imagery can’t get us to truly respond as needed. imo

Meghan Clark @drclarkm1.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
This is where my pt about rescuing metaphors of struggle from war/warrior imagery. Wrestling is precisely an example…but wider place for warrior imagery has led us to the problematic place we are at now in which we have a profound culture of violence….

The call from Pope Leo, as I understand it, is to move us away from using war metaphors at all…granting use of force may sometimes be morally necessary, perhaps simply war isn’t a rescuable lens for viewing things the world - is I think one of Leo’s challenges to Catholics, incl. theo & ethics

Meghan Clark @drclarkm1.bsky.social · 23/08/2026
I dont think its a matter of whether you can be trusted but if in 2026 rescuing military metaphors is helpful given the drastically different context of war….I think its perhaps more rescuing monastic images of struggle from military images. If that makes sense…musings from an ethicist
