Ungrading in a third-year biology laboratory indicates positive student results without loss of outcomes | Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education
Despite its ubiquity in formal education, traditional grading has long been criticized for its limitations in accurately reflecting student learning (1–4). Compounding the problem of inaccurate measur...

This is the single reason I switched to Apple years ago. I had a friend who was a developer for Microsoft at the time tell me “oh - but you can’t add X and fiddle w/ y”. What I want is to turn my machine on, do my shit, turn it off. Nothing else.

I present you my granny’s Easter cake, circa 1970
A white cake on tinfoil. It marginally resembles a rabbit with suspicious looking bright colored unidentified objects that kind of might be eggs?

Stop 8, part 3: Fun Fact: In some wrasse, a single fish can change from a female into a dominant nesting male later in life. Completely shifting its body, colour, and behaviour to take on a new role.
000
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 8, part 2: Smaller sneaker males look more like females and dart into the nest during spawning to release sperm. All types of males contribute to fertilizing eggs. In some species these strategies can even change during a lifetime
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 8: In several wrasse species, there are two or three distinct male strategies. Nesting males build nests and court females. Satellite males form temporary alliances with nester males. This strategy attracts females and possibly increases survival of offspring.

Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 7, part 4: In parrotfish, biological sex can change in response to their social environment. Fun Fact: Parrotfish woo with dancing under the full moon
000
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 7, Part 3: The development is often triggered by social conditions. If the dominant male in a group disappears, the largest female may transform into the new male, taking over reproduction for the group.
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 7, Part 2: Many species are protogynous, meaning individuals begin life as females and later develop into males. Notably, their reproductive organs shift from producing eggs to producing sperm.
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 7: Sex Change Parrotfish are brightly coloured reef fish known for their beak-like teeth that scrape algae from coral surfaces, helping maintain healthy reefs.
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 6, part 4: Fun fact: Hermaphroditic flat worms engage in “penis fencing” to determine which individual will become pregnant
000
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 6, part 3: Some species have evolved dramatic strategies to increase their success. The Roman snail (Helix pomatia) fires a tiny calcium “love dart” into its partner during courtship, delivering hormone-rich mucus that improves the chances its sperm will fertilize the eggs.
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Part 6, part 2: When two individuals meet, they exchange sperm so that both partners can later lay eggs. For slow-moving animals that rarely encounter mates, this system increases the chances that reproduction will happen.
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 6, All in One: Many snail and slugs species are simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning that in these species, each individual has both male and female reproductive organs.
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 5, part 4: Fun Fact: Seahorses often mate for life and start their mornings with a 1 hour courtship dance involving color changes and tail-twining.
000
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 5, part 3: The pouch regulates oxygen and nutrients much like a uterus. When development is complete, the male releases dozens—or even hundreds—of tiny seahorses into the water.
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 5, part 2: During courtship, the female seahorse transfers her eggs into a special structure on the male’s body called a brood pouch. Inside this pouch, the eggs are fertilized and protected while they grow.
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 5, When Males Get Pregnant: In most animals, females carry developing offspring. Seahorses show that this is not always the case.In seahorses, males are the ones that become pregnant.
100
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 4, part 4: Fun Fact: Roy and Silo, two male chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo, successfully raised chicks together. Interestingly, afterwards Silo paired with a female, showing that some animals can bond with both sexes, an example of bisexual behaviour in nature.
000
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 4, part 3: they are able to defend larger territories and share duties evenly. These examples show that in many species, successful parenting depends less on the sex of the parents and more on cooperation, care and shared investment in offspring.
110
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Stop 4, part 2: In fact, some male-male pairs have successfully raised chicks after being given abandoned eggs. Same-sex parenting is not unique to just penguins. In black swans, male-male pairs sometimes raise young together and have higher parenting success than male-female pairs because

Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
STOP 4: Same Sex Parenting Penguins are known for forming strong pair bonds during the breeding season with partners working together to build nests, incubate eggs, and raise chicks. In both the wild and in captivity, scientists have observed same-sex penguin pairs that form similar bonds.

No males, part 3: where eggs develop without fertilization. Even Komodo dragons have occasionally produced young this way when no males were present. (Option: make a side quest to see the Komodo Dragon at location 05.06)

No males, part 2: Small pieces break off, settle nearby, and grow into new individuals—essentially cloning the plant. This is one of several species where no males have ever been found. Some animals also reproduce without males. Certain whiptail lizards produce offspring through parthenogenesis,

STOP 2 (Part 1): Life Without Males Stop 2: What If There Are No Males? Many people assume reproduction always requires both males and females. That’s not always true. The alpine moss Takakia lepidozioides relies mostly on asexual fragmentation.

Fungi (part 3) In the mushroom Schizophyllum commune, scientists estimate there may be more than 20,000 mating types (or “sexes”.) This system is an example of sex that is not binary. Fun Fact: Some fungi can also change mating type to find a suitable partner (Lee and Haber, 2015)
000
Celeste got her groove back @drceleste.bsky.social · 01/04/2026
Fungi (part 2) In many mushrooms, reproduction depends on two regions of DNA called mating-type loci. Two fungi must differ at both regions to reproduce. Because each region can exist in many versions, the number of possible mating types can grow very large.

Stop 1: 20,000 Ways to Find a Match (Part 1) Fungi (including mushrooms, molds, and yeasts) don’t reproduce using male and female sexes. Instead, they use genetic categories called mating types that determine whether two individuals are compatible.

"We expected protective paternalism to play a central role in explaining why some men perceive the tradwife movement positively... We were taken aback to discover that it was instead men’s overt sexism that played the most important role in their attitudes about the tradwife movement.”
