Question 8 repeals the legal adult-use cannabis retail system. It wouldn't eliminate cannabis use or the medical program, but dismantle much of the regulated market built around testing, labeling, oversight, and taxation. Whatever your view, know what would change. #Massachusetts #CannabisPolicy

Cannabis research and news are moving quickly, and each new finding raises more good questions I’ve launched "Ask Dr. Caplan" a Q&A with evidence-based answers, careful interpretation, and links to the underlying research and PDFs. First up: Can cannabis help reduce opioid use after spine surgery?

Cannabis After Spine Surgery: Help or Hidden Risk?
Many patients expect cannabis to reduce opioid use after surgery. A large study suggests the real answer depends heavily on who was studied and how their cannabis use was defined.

The chart says one thing. Real life says another. I've noticed how often patients round down drinks, hide cannabis for sleep, or pretend a med is working just to avoid getting "in trouble" with a doctor. Wrote a bit about the "edited patient" + why the modern exam room desperately needs an overhaul.

Modern loneliness is a strange thing. It often looks like having a hundred points of contact, but zero accompaniment. The real question isn't "Do you have people?" It's "Who is close enough to notice when your world starts shrinking?" That distinction changes everything.

A useful reframe for aging: sometimes the problem is not loss of function. it's loss of margin. The body is still regulating, still adapting, still keeping you going, but with less surplus to absorb disruption cleanly. Nothing has to be broken for something important to have changed.

Wanting space and wanting people are not opposites. Most of the time, the tension between them isn’t about personality or preference. It’s about capacity. I wrote about how easily depletion gets mistaken for identity, and what nervous systems are actually signaling right now. Psychology Today:

The Quiet Tension Between Needing Space and Needing People
Wanting time alone and wanting connection can both be healthy. The trouble starts when we mistake depleted capacity for a permanent change in who we are.
