Update: for some reason, this is now resolved. I un-clicked settings, then re-clicked settings, and today spellcheck is back and no "helping me write." Sorcery? Maybe. Or the AI version of turning it off and turning it on again is actually turning it on, so you can turn it off.

That's my sense, but I have yet to fully focus on resolving it. But the settings options haven't changed - so spell-check is on, but apparently not checking. Mostly it just underlines sentences it thinks I should simplify, but doesn't underline typos. Which is like functionally a complete downgrade.

I use Google Workspace, and I haven't yet figured out where this feature is hiding. The option has been there for a while to "polish" but I think it recently became not optional, and now it has a "help me write" option (gross). And simultaneously it stopped underlining my typos 🫠

My work email is now trying to "polish my writing" (ew, no) but also *not* checking it for spelling. I need the spelling check for the typos, friends - undo, cntrl z, I don't want the computer's opinion on polishing, I want the computer to tell me when I typed "polishgin" instead of "polishing".

there are so many great existing tools that work well, keep you in control of your work, and don't violate the trust between you and the author. all I've seen in ai uses for editing (all types) so far are worse solutions to already-solved problems
