Is that because we are descendants of the survivors? Or did it really kill 1/3 of Europe with a transmission rate like that?

Indeed. The hit/miss profile is curiously distorted...

Having had Facebook remove a video of me awkwardly playing Beethoven's Pathetique with my son balanced on my lap because it was apparently so good a performance it triggered automated copyright for a professional recording... 🙄 I do not get how copyright processes have such a poor hit/miss rate...

Deep male voices are perceived as more attractive and formidable, but does this hold up when a listener can actually see who's speaking? A new paper from #RSOS tested this: doi.org/10.1098/rsos... @drboothroyd.bsky.social @jrut.bsky.social

I often think that if a future palaeontologist were to dig up me and my close friends, perhaps perished and preserved in some kind of volcanic disaster or placed lovingly in a shared grave, that they would assume I was a different species of hominid to the others...

The presidents seem to have been alternating recently at least do maybe that's true for secretary too. (No secretary on the website atm.)

Do the president and secretary have to alternate genders or something?

This was also my take on the Vanderbilt State of Anthropology report. A mostly historical set of internecine wars, the bad handling of the Chagnon allegations, and a shift in balance across a subset of departments. Not quite what the umbrella report claimed to be epistemological rot.

Revealed: The sexiest male voices, according to women
New research has revealed a 'sweet spot' when it comes to the vocal pitch that women find sexy.

Lynda Boothroyd @drboothroyd.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Lastly, there are studies suggesting a deeper voice makes you sound larger. When people can actually see you (as we usually can in interpersonal perception) there is no effect of pitch in perceived height BUT a deeper voice can still trick people into thinking you're slightly heavier.

Lynda Boothroyd @drboothroyd.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
Also - what is the contribution of the voice versus the visuals? Well, it turns out vocal pitch information constitutes only a teeny tiny part of the overall social perception. Visual information is doing much, much more work.
Dominance: Visual-only ratings, when included as the only fixed effect, were highly significant predictors of perceived fighting ability, physical strength and social dominance (p < 0.001). For each of these models, the proportion of variance explained was 35.4, 37.6 and 12.3% for perceived fighting ability, physical strength and social dominance, respectively. These figures increased to 36.4, 39.5 and 17.1%, respectively, when F0 and FS were added to the model as fixed effects. All fixed effects were highly significant (p < 0.001) in every model. The marginal R2 for each model is summarized in table 4.Table 4, repeating the information in the text in image1

New paper from my ex PhD student @jrut.bsky.social! Lots of research on sexual selection and the human voice uses audio-only stimuli - what happens when you can see the person who's talking? A deeper voice can still make you sound more dominant but deep voices were not rated more attractive.
doi.org
Low voice pitch, when accompanied by video, increases perceived dominance but not attractiveness
Abstract. Vocal masculinity, when increased digitally in audio recordings, tends to enhance men's perceived attractiveness and dominance. This observation

How Kafka-esque. I usually get a big red warning that I will need an ETA for the UK but can still check in on the app, but I did get quizzed at boarding when leaving Nairobi last week. "Newcastle... Where's your ETA?" "I don't have one." "How are you cleared to enter the UK?" "... I'm British...?"

I mean one of the problems with the explosion in LLMs is that they are contributing to the excessive carbon power usage which is endangering the continued existence of our comfortable technological world (and the future of those not enjoying its comforts too.)

Given that at the time he gave a very stroppy speech at her funeral and then buggered off back to the Southern Hemisphere right after she was entered on his pay-to-enter country estate ... I dont think that was ever his focus no matter what he claimed.

It is in keeping with the entire saga of Diana's death in that there is zero consideration from anyone about the emotional wellbeing of her bereaved children.

Why, why, whyyyyy would anyone ever upload their original thinking to an online LLM chatbot if they don't want it to be used by that company? Sure, you toggle learning off. I don’t believe them when they say that's really not being stored.

But writing up a scientific study is a valuable skill to learn and practice and worth assessing too. (Okay v few will end up being scientists but quite a number will do A Level or even degree level science, and structured report writing is common in many fields).

What? There is no ambiguity that Mrs Norris is talking about Mrs Price there. It would make that line incredibly weird if she meant anyone else. And when you add the Betram eldest son/daughter being named Thomas and Maria, obviously Fanny was also named for her mother.
