Guardian spirits, in Japanese tradition, usually come in pairs—one with an open mouth 'ah', the beginning, and one with a closed jaw, 'un,' to represent the end. A call and an answer, this piece was inspired by swirling Japanese fox spirits, kitsune.

This piece portrays a Sengoku period noblewoman with a gashadokuro, mixing Japanese lore with the Western art tradition of ‘vanitas’ and ‘memento mori.’ Young, beautiful, and dressed in opulent finery, she sits cradled in the arms of the large skeleton. “All is vanity, and remember you must die.”

In Japanese folktales, gashadokuro are giant skeletons created from ghosts of people who die by the masses. Their desire for vengeance pushes them to consume and wreck havoc until they burn themselves out and crumble into dust.

Tigers are auspicious in Japan, but they aren’t native. Inspired by Chinese scrolls and legends, traditional Japanese artists who’d never seen tigers used imagination to design “tigers”. Based on that, a young girl paints stripes onto a scowling beast surrounded by whimsically designed tigers(?).

A Japanese girl in a kimono paints a tiger, surrounded by tiger-esque creatures.
