Anne Koelewijn @drannek.bsky.social · 04/03/2025For sagittal plane movements, the orientation of the axis perpendicular to the plane can probably be estimated from the movement itself rather than special calibration movements. For 3D movements, I’m not sure. A direct optimization or ML model might work, but should be developed and tested first. 100
Anne Koelewijn @drannek.bsky.social · 04/03/2025So yes! (Should have answered both messages at the same time). It depends on your definition of assuming but we measure the position (with a scale or with a marker on the IMU) and estimate the alignment using the gravity direction and calibration movements (in the sagittal plane “only”) 010
Anne Koelewijn @drannek.bsky.social · 04/03/2025Yes, you could even do that without using orientation data and use the optimization to find the optimal alignment and orientation estimation. We did this with a machine learning approach and it worked quite well for the position. We’re still working on that publication. 010

Anne Koelewijn @drannek.bsky.social · 04/03/2025We use the acceleration, angular velocities, and position and orientation of the sensor on the body segment but do not use IK.
