A lot of words to avoid saying 'I realize there's close to %0 chance of me getting elected as an NDP in this riding'.

Darren Kirby @dragonbyte.ca · 22/09/2026
UGH, yeah, my other pet peeve is parachute candidates. I get that life is complicated, but I don't think it would be particularly onerous on our democracy to require that candidates live primarily in the riding for at least a year prior to running in an election, and stay living there.

Just like in ON and NS, first-past-the-post incentivises parties to trigger snap elections when polling shows an increased majority, even without majority voter support. Proportional representation fixes this toxic dynamic, encouraging cooperation over political gamesmanship.

I live in one of the ridings that elects potted plants as long as they're Con/Lib/right, so I'm effectively disenfranchised anyway. I will, however, have a good laugh when the current floor-crosser MLA learns she can't win here under the NDP banner.

Agree, but I'm getting strongly pushed into DGAF territory. Between this, and Carney at the fed level, I am so tired of our broken electoral system forcing us to vote against those we hate, rather than for candidates we can get behind. This is how you kill voter engagement.

This is accurate except I've seen the show, and thought it was terrible.

Blatantly selfish and self-serving nonsense. No one wants an election. The only reason the NDP have a boost in the polls is because of the conservative sideshow. I don't know anyone who thinks the NDP are actually doing a good job of governing.

Shitty move by Eby, IMO. I'll be sitting this one out, or maybe waste my vote on Green, as in my riding the NDP candidate will be a formerly Conservative floor-crosser, rather than the actual NDP candidate I FUCKING VOTED FOR in the last election. Get bent, Eby.

Advance voting started on Friday, and her name is on the ballot (under the Conservative Party banner), so, I guess she's running.

It's baffling. This guy isn't an AI techbro, he's a professor of genetics. I don't understand how he can't see that encouraging his students to outsource their scientific literacy is a counter-productive dead end. These are hard-skills that must be practised over a career, or they will be lost.

Interesting talk. I had been using a full KDE desktop on my Linux machines since ~2000 or so but recently switched to Niri, a tiling WM and find it much better suits my workflow. This is coincident with leaving behind big and heavy click-centered IDEs for nvim with a judicious selection of plugins.

If you were purposefully trying to completely destroy scientific credibility in general, I can't think of a better way to go about it.

Darren Kirby @dragonbyte.ca · 20/09/2026
And on the other end they want you to use AI to crunch the data, a different AI to author the paper, and yet another AI to 'peer review' it. So by the end there's no scientific discovery, no dissemination of knowledge, just the world's stupidest game of hallucinogenic telephone.

American exceptionalism is downplaying a structured attack on a whole other country's sovereignty as the trolling of a 'bored' individual. I have no patience for this kind of patronizing American liberal/leftist. I'd rather deal with MAGA. At least they're honest about their contempt for Canada.

Others will of course disagree, but I'm not of the opinion it means much of anything outside demarcating a ~30 day window around when you were born. I tend to agree with Doug Stanhope's take on it 😂 www.youtube.com/watch?v=IaHi...

See, the entire premise of this poll is fucking stupid because you don't forgive someone for egregiously harming you after some arbitrary event or some arbitrary length of time. You *might* forgive them when they stop the harm, show genuine remorse for the harm, and make things right. So...never.

Season 4's Last Exit to Springfield is the best episode by far and this is non-negotiable. From the era when they packed five episodes worth of jokes in 22 minutes.

Wikipedia has not yet updated to reflect this, but iNaturalist has. Perhaps they use different taxonomies?

Darren Kirby @dragonbyte.ca · 19/08/2026
I'm a bit annoyed, as it would appear that some bored taxonomists have taken the noble Bison bison (classified by Linnaeus himself) and lumped them into genus Bos, which is shared with domestic cattle. Bos bison? Ugh.
