@jaseg Still impressive they managed to compactify a whole CT scanner enough to fit into a large truck with room for medical personnel and patient left over! I duckducked an image search and I'm amazed at how much space there is inside those rigs.

Holy fuck, my body just did something incredibly gross that required my manual intervention to make it happen, but it is *such a relief* now. 😵‍💫 I am not going to go into detail here. Not even behind a CW/topic fold.

@nytpu I've also been pretty heavily soured on Keychron's kit because the keyboard that I do have replaces the print screen, scroll lock, and pause/break keys with three that do useless-to-me functions and there is literally no way to set them back to the original functions. Pause/break is my […]

Oh yeah, extra challenge mode: I have been so accustomed to using low profile keyboards for such a long time that full-height keyboards actually screw with my muscle memory. At least, I'm pretty sure Logi's "normal" keyboards are low-ish profile.

Rubber domes serve me better than springs do because I tend to rest my fingers heavily on my keyboard. I had WAY TOO MANY uncommanded actuations on my mechanical keyboard because the springs did not offer the resistance force needed for my fingers to rest on them.

Do mechanical key(board) switches using a rubber dome for the spring mechanism exist? I really really prefer the tactile feel and resistance of rubber domes over springs, and I did daily a mechanical keyboard for a couple of years before abandoning it and going back to my beloved Logitech keebs.

I don't really know why for the past couple of weeks I've been lowkey obsessing about reverse-engineering the de-integrated logic of the RCA/TI CD4059. There is literally no reason today for anyone to know how to use that chip or how it works internally unless one happens to have an electronics […]

Now on to the subject of COAL. I mentioned that producing bricks and cement domestically from imported coal is cheap. That stops immediately when you consider steel. Steel is HONGREH for coal, so much so that you NEED domestic production of coal or the import cost to fuel steel production […]

The CD4059 is, at least on paper, an absolutely *fascinating* IC and I would absolutely love to some day sit down and make an attempt at reverse engineering its logic and then drawing that out in a schematic. Or if someone else has already done so and published it somewhere, I would love to sit […]

That's obviously not going to happen. I'm a nearly-40yo amateur who can't even motivate themself to sit down at the bench and poke leads into a breadboard, and the 4000 series is last century's digital technology at this point. Everything today is shiny new ASICs and MCUs and FPGAs and embedded […]

The amount of no fucks given by Texas Instruments is so painfully obvious when you look at almost any of the documentation of the 4000-series of ICs. They're almost all shitty scans of the original RCA datasheets but with some extra shiny new TI-branded packaging info pages tacked on to the end.

Also because I want an excuse to use a slightly obscure 4000-series IC for that parallel logic which makes it all the more obvious that my use of the 4017 with extra helper logic for the rest of the movement is a deliberate choice. "You could have just used this chip to–" Yes. I could have. I […]

As designed, the complication uses no feedback from its own output to trigger the helper logic which introduces the intercalary lag necessary to track the julian leap year. The parallel block that introduces that lag sends its output clock through a 555 timer set up as a time-delayed Schmitt […]

I wonder if propagation delay through a little bit of 4000-series cmos logic is enough to be measurable on a basic oscilloscope. 🤔 If I ever get around to prototyping the Annus Menses complication of Horologium Keplerus, I'd be tempted to find out if my oscope can actually measure that.
