Indigenous communities working with psychedelics have understood this for generations, holding the medicine ritual within a wider context of the other-than-human world. As Grandmother Julieta Casimiro, a Mazatec wisdom keeper, puts it: "It is nature that does the healing."

Ralph Metzner knew in 1999 that psychedelics can "cultivate a more direct psychic, conscious connection with the natural world." The research has deepened since. Time in nature reduces anxiety and heightens wellbeing — and can produce altered states that closely parallel psychedelic experience.

"Nature loves courage," Terence McKenna once said. Rising eco-anxiety. Painfully slow progress on the ecological crisis. Can psychedelics and ecotherapy, together, help restore our connection to nature — and each other? I'm giving a talk on this on 24th Sept 🧵

What do ecopsychology and environmental philosophy have to say to one another? Lots! They're in an intimate relationship, tangled up in deep ecology, ecofeminism, bioregionalism and animism. Writing for a forthcoming 'Handbook on Environmental Philosophy'. #Ecopsychology #EnvironmentalPhilosophy

I hadn't seen this, but it looks like a more sophisticated version of similar models: consciousness awareness at the tip and out of consciousness (subconscious) below. My fundamental difference: we can expand our awareness into the lower area via several practices = Mindfulness, psychedelics etc.

I wrote about the ego as the root of ecological crisis back in 1994. Thirty years on, that same myth is driving the polycrisis. The "big I am" is still the problem, but, as Toby Kiers says in this documentary: "the concept of an individual is starting to disappear." 🔗 mothlife.org/news/allpa-u...

Saturday, London: two starkly different perspectives. I was at the MOTH Festival exploring the rights and wellbeing of the More-than-Human world. Meanwhile, protesters on the streets outside called for migrants to be deported. Curiously, my response to both perspectives is the same: you belong here.

"For centuries, we’ve looked for ways in which humans are different from other animals. But this is entirely wrong-headed. What makes us human is not our differences, but our ecological belonging. As a human being, you are a member of a wider community of species and ecosystems. You belong here".

Yet the field is drifting toward minimalist protocols. Less facilitator contact. Standardise out the human element. Trust the molecule. This new research suggests that leaves real therapeutic value on the table.

The mystical-type experiences most linked to therapeutic gains — reduced depression, anxiety, existential distress — were meaningfully shaped by facilitators. Which means outcomes were too.

What changed was clinical context - people carrying real symptoms, real histories, real stakes. I've sat with participants in psychedelic trials. What happens in the room is not passive. Preparation. Presence. Containment. Integration. These aren't optional add-ons to the pharmacology - they're key

New research put a number on something facilitators have known from the inside. In clinical psychedelic trials, session facilitators account for ~13.6% of variance in acute experience — comparable to therapist effects in conventional psychotherapy. In healthy volunteers? 0.8%. Same drug. Same dose.
