📣 #NewArticle: Using the Psychology of Radical Healing to address the coloniality of gender is now published in the American Psychologist. Let’s come together in solidarity, in care, and in action. psycnet.apa.org/record/2026-... @apajournals.bsky.social
Image announcing a new article titled, “Building and Practicing Anticolonial Psychotherapy: Using the Psychology of Radical Healing to Address the Coloniality of Gender” published in the American Psychologist and authored by Sergio Domínguez Jr, Em Matsuno, Hector Y. Adames, Della V. Mosley, Jahkazia M. Richardson, Joonwoo Lee, Marquel Norton, and Stephanie L. Budge.

Abstract reads:

“This article examines the role of psychology in perpetuating coloniality and commends the efforts of scholar–activists in developing radical healing methodologies. Moved by our engagement with two-spirit, trans, and nonbinary People of Color, we explore the interplay between coloniality, racism, and Western gender expectations. We discuss how these dynamics foster the internalization of stigma at both individual and collective levels. Motivated by scholar– activists who challenge the colonial foundations of gender, we detail practical ways in which clinicians can employ the five anchors of radical healing to address what Lugones calls the coloniality of gender (2016), and Chavez-Dueñas et al. (2022) have described as racial–gendered coloniality.”

#NewPublication 🟡 "The Fierce Ethical Urgency of Decoloniality in Therapy: From Understanding to Action" 🟡 Published in @apajournals.bsky.social American Psychologist. 🟡 Available and free to download at psycnet.apa.org/record/2026-... @nchavez.bsky.social
Image announcing a new article published in the American Psychologist.

Article is titled, “The Fierce Ethical Urgency of Decoloniality in Therapy: From Understanding to Action” and the authors are Dr. Nayeli Y. Chavez-Dueñas, Dr. Hector Y. Adames, Dr. Kenneth S. Pope, and Dr. Melba J. T. Vasquez.

The abstract reads: “Disentangling psychology from the grip of methods, values, ways of knowing, and power structures considered normative within Western societies, all of which have been used to justify dominance and coloniality, presents a complex challenge and an ethical imperative. Psychology must rise to this challenge. This article invites readers to reflect on how coloniality influences the lives of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color in the United States and people from the Global South. The article examines the history of imperialism and colonialism. It considers how Western psychology’s ideas (i.e., psyimperialism) were spread and imposed on others (i.e., psycolonization). This approach fell short of meeting psychology’s ethical responsibilities. The article then discusses why it is critical to broaden the scope of our perspective beyond reflexive acceptance of Western ways of thinking, especially those that violate our ethical values, and weigh other approaches. We conclude with a call to action, offering questions and suggesting strategies that may be useful in moving beyond intentions and commitments to effectively decolonize our practice.”

Adames, H. Y., Chavez-Dueñas, N. Y., Jernigan, M. M., & Helms, J. E. (2024). Racism-conscious reflexivity in qualitative research: A practical methodological framework. Qualitative Psychology. Advance online publication. https://doi.org/10.1037/qup0000315

Abstract:
Advancing research methodologies grounded in critical theories and fostering scientific knowledge conscious of racism require thoughtfulness, integrity, rigor, and an unwavering commitment to racial justice. It demands that we, as researchers, pause and reflect—that we consider the multitude of ways that our racial socialization, biases, and all levels of racism (e.g., systemic, interpersonal, internalized) influence the entire research process. This article advocates for qualitative researchers to take a deliberate pause and engage in thoughtful reflection about racism, racial identity, power, and bias, as well as the importance and ethics of questioning methodologies to help prevent the creation of racially oppressive scholarship. To achieve this goal, we present the racism-conscious reflexivity in research (RCR) framework, which invites researchers to actively pay attention to how (a) racial identity schemas, (b) racialized cognitive and emotional biases, (c) information processing strategies, and (d) social interactions between and among research team members shape all aspects of a research study. The RCR framework also considers how these four areas influence how researchers respond to and think about racism, its influence on people’s experiences, and its operations in research methodologies. Coding scenarios are used to illustrate the application of the RCR framework in the analysis and interpretation process of qualitative research. Methodological guidance is provided. Image announcing a new article on a research study. The article is titled, “Colonial Shadows: Exploring Coloniality of Being Among Puerto Rican Immigrants in the United States” and published in the American Psychological Association (APA) Journal of Counseling Psychology. The authors are Dr. Cristalís Capielo Rosario, Dr. Hector Y. Adames, Ms. Génesis Ramos-Rosado, Ms. Nancy J. Rodríguez-Muro, and Ms. Loíza A. DeJesús-Sullivan. Public Statement: Coloniality, or the enduring legacy of domination and White supremacy stemming from colonization, manifests across power dynamics, knowledge systems, and personal identity. The present study examines how coloniality can influence how Puerto Rican immigrants describe themselves and other Puerto Ricans, as well as their cultural patterns. The descriptions used by participants often mimic the language Spanish and U.S. colonizers have used against Puerto Ricans. Findings from our study can have important implications for the identity development.
