Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Have you considered that solar panels and the resulting infinite energy will make all things in space free? We can just use electricity to zap the oxygen out of the lunar regolith. Clearly that can't apply to Earth, hence why free mining in space doesn't imply free mining here. 1160
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 07/08/2026TBH, that's about the logic behind the "$1T in rare earth metals in Afghanistan" claims that have been running for a while. They're expensive because the costs to refine are so high, they're not actually that rare, and there's geopolitical and transport considerations to go with extraction there 2410
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 28/07/2026There is a general "no recording without permission" rule at all of those types of events. Meta-glasses are just particularly shit because they don't alert people to being recorded (and it's not like people going to those events can turn that off or otherwise disable an alert with paint) 000

Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 03/07/2026Honestly, I look forwards to everything you post. It's weird, and out there, and you, and I love it. 070
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 02/07/2026TBH, this isn't strictly invalid. There's something called "Nothing up my sleeve numbers" where you use a "random" number to seed a crypto algorithm. Pi, 1234567890, and the like are pretty common. You just need something that people can see isn't chosen to introduce a vuln. www.xkcd.com/221/xkcd.comRandom Number 120
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 02/07/2026Hard to predict entropy seed the PRNG within Windows and Linux. Humans are broadly unsure if those are any less "effectively" random than alpha-beta decay, given how much analysis there is against them due to being the basis of cryptography. They "might" be deterministic but they seem unpredictable 140
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 02/07/2026That is "technically" deterministic, but it's virtually impossible to predict and hard to exploit. You also need to know enough about the game to know when the PRNG is being advanced. SSBM's RNG is predictable on start, but the moment you move, an effectively random number of dust clouds breaks it 120
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 02/07/2026So, there's secure random and insecure random. Insecure random can be predicted and analyzed. Lots of older games use it because it's "good" enough. Secure random is much harder to predict because it uses the OS to grab data based on resistor temps and mouse movements and other hard stuff. 210
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 02/07/2026One more, Stardew Valley uses a few random calls, but the date when random events occur is seeded on creation, so you can actually look up stuff like the meteor or witch ahead of time. 150
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 02/07/2026One of the cooler ones is that Doom didn't actually generate random numbers, it just uses a consistent lookup table of "random values". It's also how you can send replays and run them within your game, since the RNG is always within that 256 byte array, so it must be consistent or cheated. 1171
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 02/07/2026Final Fantasy 7 is deterministic because they've been able to figure out what calls the RNG. So if you count running versus walking, you can control random encounters. SSB Melee is seeded randomly, but you can get what seed you're on with 5 random events (such as rand character) and know what's up. 2111

Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 12/06/2026Eh... according to the current US administration, yes. And they've articulated funding and intended strategy in terms of the Space Race. Which is what I think prompted Zach's statement. China has also articulated that there is an AI race, but usually frames it in terms of industry strategy. 000
Dracum Sum @dracumsum.bsky.social · 12/06/2026I think Zach hits your point. Previously, the Dreadnought race was "costly" but an effective navy needs more than big ships. Austria-Hungary's participation was ego, but it could look like the UK. The current AI race can't replicate the "clear and achievable" outcomes that the moon landing hit. 100
