One problem with British HE is that its gigantic bureaucracy (e.g., assessment scrutiny panels, exam boards, etc.) is obsessed with "quality assurance," but if you actually look at the quality of education, it's just shit. So quality assurance basically means making sure things stay shitty as ever 💩

My observation is that many British sociologists in top depts don't publish in top soc journals or university presses. Universities want global reputation but evaluate research according to domestic REF criteria rather than global benchmarks. So fame in the UK rarely translates to North America.

It's clear to me now that many really don't care about sociology as a discipline, but are simply using the moment to express their grievance and resentment toward the journals and departments that rejected them. Funny that this is the same group of people who are against "grievance studies."
