Earth has been this warm before during the last 300,000 years. The scary part is the current speed of warming. Past swings unfolded over millennia. Today’s warming occurred in decades. Even allowing for smoothed ice-core proxies, the rate of change is immense. Source: buff.ly/VcD9E13

While I can see this being useful for packaging dry goods/non-food products, I wonder how useful it will be for foodstuffs, and if it can make any impact on beverage containers at all, most of which contain water and acids/sugars/salts/electrolytes/"brawndo" etc.

I really recommend the 2022 documentary “It’s Quieter in the Twilight,” which profiles the scientists working in relative obscurity to keep the Voyager spacecraft operating—many of them past retirement age, but unwilling to quit until the Voyagers do. It was very sweet and thought-provoking.

🚨 New publication🚨 A new study explores the microbial communities living in Lake Karum, Ethiopia, one of the world's most saline lakes, and the surrounding salt flats. Read the early access paper: buff.ly/0iLdv5R #Astrobiology #Microbiology #Metagenomics #ExtremeLife
Metagenomic insights into the taxonomic and metabolic diversity of the microbiome of Lake Karum in the Danakil Depression, Ethiopia.
Microbes in Ethiopia’s Lake Karum reveal how life adapts to extreme environments while supporting vital environmental processes.
Michael Macey, Velislava Ilieva, Ben Stephens, Ben Tatton, Ermias Balcha, Susanne Schwenzer, Terry McGenity, Hagos Miruts, Felipe Gomez, Barbara Cavalazzi and Karen Olsson-Francis
Lake Karum hosts diverse microbes adapted to survive in one of Earth's most extreme environments.

Different microbial communities can perform many of the same important environmental functions.

The study reveals new insights into how life adapts and thrives under extreme conditions.
Studying life in extreme environments like Lake Karum helps us understand the remarkable adaptability of microorganisms and the hidden roles they play in keeping ecosystems functioning.

It’s incredibly hot - so hot it turns to steam underwater! But water also has a VERY high specific heat capacity (it takes a lot of heat energy to increase its temperature), and there’s way more water than lava (usually)! Here’s a cool example of West Mata erupting: youtu.be/FCH6dVcxL3c?...

A dark tan-coloured patch of Mars, with an area of lower land running between the left and centre of the frame. Large islands dot the lower land, and steep cliffs appear to divide the lower and higher land. The right side of the landscape is smoother and slightly darker. A small scale bar at the bottom right indicates that north is to the left, and that a line approximately one tenth of the image width is 20 km long.
