Also, I think the fact that we are a host nation is a bigger factor than Trump making a phone call. Host nations always get favorable treatment, see: South Korea vs. Italy, a game the Italians still talk about today.

I think if you look at Anna's other posts, she explains well that Article 27 doesn't differentiate between "automatic" match bans or otherwise; all disciplinary actions can be reviewed. Think of it this way: If "automatic" means unreviewable then all red card match bans are unappealable.

Right, but upon review he was given the two extra days. That is normal and expected when the foul is as bad as Ronaldo's (he purposefully threw an elbow). He served the one match ban for the last qualifier. In normal circumstances that ban isn't getting overturned, I don't think.

You think Trump influenced the decision for Ronaldo to play?! That's the first I've heard that. I doubt he even knows who he is (although I hear the argument: "He's popular, very good looking, very strong and he should play. Very handsome guy my good look at him.").

It definitely looks corrupt, but Portugal wanted Ronaldo's suspension from the qualifiers to be postponed for the group stage. They requested a review and FIFA obliged by postponing the ban under Article 27. I think the World Cup should just have a red card appeals process the way the PL does.

FIFA (and this filters down to UEFA, CONCACAF, etc.) are extremely allergic to suggesting a ref got something wrong. So, I don't think that explanation would ever come even if the whole process was followed properly.

In all other tournaments, FIFA or its governing bodies have an appeal process for red cards. It's not the norm, but red cards do get overturned! It happens multiple times in any given season. For whatever reason, they don't have one for the World Cup and are relying on Article 27 instead.

It would have been better if FIFA had just come clean and said, "This wasn't a red card offense and we're taking away the suspension." The next best option would be them having a *real* appeals process for red cards LIKE THEY HAVE IN EVERY OTHER TOURNAMENT. Instead we get Trumpy corruption.

This is a thing that has stood out to me: Belgium's argument really makes no sense. Article 27 exists. You can say it is overly broad or that it sucks. Or that it insulted your mom! It still exists and FIFA already used it in *this tournament* to suspend match bans!

It is pretty egregious that it went from *not even a yellow* on the pitch to a red via VAR. That usually only happens if the ref completely misses an aggressive, after-the-play action.
