Is that happening again this year?

Super Rugby has been doing synchronised team announcements on the Wednesday afternoon, and it is working well.

Final round for SRP! While we know the top six, the exact lineup for the qualifying finals is still unknown. I’ve written a tool that lets you simulate and visualise the ladder permutations. Click for details (and link to the browser-based tool). open.substack.com/pub/dimitrip...

New season about to start, and just like the players tuning up in today’s pre-season game, we are also preparing some exciting things on the data front. If you want to be part of it, get in touch! We have a targeted call for PhD Scholarships for domestic students: www.qut.edu.au/study/fees-a...

For today I’ve kept things simple: the higher-ranked team wins. We have two years to be build more sophisticated models. 😅

B.B. King & Ray Charles must have been great! I've heard B.B King live, but not seen him (I was outside the open-air venue when he played at the Jazz à Juan Festival).

I’ve released the code, in case you could need it: github.com/SystemsResea... The permutation selection is in the Round of 16 section of the notebook.

Samoa also has the easiest draw of all band-4 teams. Of course, it will only matter if they improve, but they have a great opportunity, given how much worse it could have been.

Australian teams need more games. The new Super Rugby Aus competition provides some opportunities. If cost was no object, I’d like to see it longer (as well as going full home-and-away for SRP).

Super Rugby Pacific is only 16 rounds of regular season, with two byes per team, so 17 games if you make the final. That’s 31 total with the internationals.

Just arrived in London. So far, two English jerseys and five South African ones. Now to find a good place to watch the games. Any recommendations near Wimbledon? Ideally somewhere that would have decent numbers of Irish and/or Australian, so that I’m not alone cheering for these two teams.

Off to the UK, where the weather probably won’t be great, so Brisbane has decided to help my transition (from yesterday’s 38.5°C) by making this morning wet and miserable. Sorry everyone, it might be my fault.

I’m working on an update of my rankings simulator, to look more closely at the path to a top-6 for the Wallabies. Now that they have “only” four games left, it is more manageable to look at specific combinations of results. I should be able to post that later today.

When there’s something to be won (such as next year’s Six Nations), you could argue it makes sense (not least financially), but for this November it seems very different.

It depends how we define fairness. Does a fair draw give teams an equal chance of reaching the round of 16 (irrespective of their strength), or does it give them a probability that is as close as possible to their strength? And do we maximise average fairness, or minimise the largest unfairness?
000
Dimitri Perrin @dperrin.bsky.social · 29/09/2025
Yes, I’ve noticed that it is what you have done, but I wasn’t sure what made it fair. It makes being ranked 6th the best possible ranking (assuming that the rankings actually reflect team strength).
000
Dimitri Perrin @dperrin.bsky.social · 29/09/2025
It depends what you mean by fair. Is it about giving relatively weaker teams a leg up, to increase competition, or is it about rewarding higher ranked teams?

Dimitri Perrin @dperrin.bsky.social · 14/09/2025
You’re very welcome. Pre-ordered and all set to dive into it once it drops.

Dimitri Perrin @dperrin.bsky.social · 14/09/2025
Australia dropped to 7th, but looking at a single week does not give you the whole picture. You need to look at all possible results, so it is time to update the rankings simulations. Everything is still to play for, not just for the TRC. open.substack.com/pub/dimitrip...

It might have been Jonathan Drennan’s SMH article. It was pretty good, but missing the impact of the sequence of results as well as the results from the other teams. That’s where the simulation tool becomes handy. It captures all games, rather than just the Wallabies.
