A message on CBS News from WGAE President Tom Fontana
A Message on CBS News from WGAE President Tom Fontana

Like many of you, I have been alarmed by recent developments at CBS News. In the past year, CBS has enacted cruel and needless layoffs across the organization and shuttered CBS News Radio. In addition, based on a string of public reporting and confidential reports from WGAE members, it is clear that CBS brass is engaged in a near-constant level of editorial interference that would have previously been unthinkable.

Over the course of the last few weeks, CBS has laid off or fired multiple newsroom workers and journalists, most recently Scott Pelley; CBS management is apparently too thin-skinned to handle the honest scrutiny of their own journalists. These assaults on CBS News, an institution of American journalism for nearly a century, are more than mere ideological interference with the news. They display a profound contempt for the journalism profession, for our members who have dedicated their lives to informing the public about the world, and for the ethics that underpin true journalism, chief among them honesty, integrity, and objectivity.

To our friends and colleagues at CBS News: we see you, and you are not alone. Thousands of your union brothers, sisters, and siblings have your backs. We stand shoulder to shoulder with you now, we will be there with you when this difficult time in American life passes, and we will help you build what comes next.

The San Diego Convention Center floor is now 100% union! IT Technicians and Event Coordinators employed by Smart City Networks have voted overwhelmingly to join IATSE Local 122, becoming the last group at the facility to unionize! 💪
In a decisive victory for workers at one of the West Coast's premier convention venues, IT Technicians and Event Coordinators employed by Smart City Networks at the San Diego Convention Center have voted to join the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) Local 122. The election, held on May 21, 2026, resulted in a vote of 10 in favor and 2 opposed, an 83% margin in support of union representation. With this organizing victory, Smart City Networks becomes the last in-house employer at the facility to be unionized, completing a fully union convention center floor.
The newly formed bargaining unit covers 12 workers across four classifications: Technician I, Technician II, Event Coordinators, and Customer Service Representatives. These workers are responsible for designing, deploying, and maintaining the high-speed internet infrastructure, Wi-Fi networks, and event technology systems that serve the thousands of planners, exhibitors, and attendees who pass through the San Diego Convention Center each year for events including San Diego Comic-Con, the American Society of Hematology (ASH) Annual Meeting, and the ESRI User Conference, among many others.
Smart City Networks is a national company operating in 25 convention centers across the United States, delivering high-speed internet, Wi-Fi, and cutting-edge event technology to trade shows and exhibitions nationwide. Their workers are the backbone of that operation, ensuring seamless connectivity and expert support for Planners, Exhibitors, and Attendees at every event.
