The densest clusters are in Mayo in the west, the Monaghan and Louth area along the east-central border, and Donegal in the north, with scattered townlands elsewhere and few in the south. Below the map, a county list ranks Mayo (5,482 records), Monaghan (4,734), Donegal (4,468), Dublin (3,430) and Louth (1,817). A "Strongest townlands" table lists Inishard Island, Mayo at 17 of 23 residents (74%), Carrickloughan, Louth at 31 of 46 (67%), and Corlat, Monaghan at 65 of 98 (66%). A sidebar gives research tips: start with the darkest townlands, compare census years, check neighbouring townlands, and a note that a shared place is not proof of kinship.
