It was great opportunity to not only showcase the DCDR but to exchange views, ideas and heritage related issues. We would like to thank Steve Wood from the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway who was leading the group.

He was even visited in the cab by his daughters, Emer and Ella, who told our photographer that their dad was super-cool. We have to agree!

The path to becoming a fully qualified driver was a long, hard slog for Des, like all of our new drivers, but his hard work and determination paid off in the end and he can now drive all of our GM locomotives without an instructor looking over his shoulder. Well done Des!

It was exam day for driver Des Sage, who had completed two years of intensive training to get to this stage. This included passing out as shunter & guard along the way. The final stage consisted of a written rules exam, verbal rules follow-up, & an intensive day of train operations.

If you visited us on Saturday you will have noticed GM Locomotive 124 was sporting L-plates front and rear, and you might have wondered what was going on.

We were back at #RailLink’s Belfast exhibition last week, with our Robert championing the cause of heritage rail within the wider rail industry. It was great to catch up with industry friends and make some new connections.

We had two very distinguished visitors today, with gorgeous pointers Ruby and Nessa taking a trip out to Inch Abbey with their humans. Ruby and Nessa's story is quite a remarkable one - both were found homeless in Turkey, before being adopted and brought to NI. We're a very doggie friendly venue!

The good news is there were no major faults. After the drivers had a few runs on the South Line, we finished the day with a full line run on the North Line, with volunteers on board the driving trailer to enjoy the experience.

90 drove back to Downpatrick where driving trailer 749 was hauled out of the yard by GM loco 124, so the two could come together, connect all the electrical jumpers and air pipes, and give the duo a proper test.

A power car moving solo is always a strange sight, and the reverse moves need to be carried out slowly and carefully under control of a shunter with two-way radio due to lack of visibility. We also checked platform clearances on the Loop Platform as it’s the first time an 80 class has been through.

Downpatrick & County Down Railway @downrail.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
Ahead of power car 69 hopefully coming into service later this year we took the opportunity to turn careworn power car 90 on the newly restored triangle, so we could take driving trailer 749 for test runs to make sure everything works.

For some time now a small team, led by Robin Haldane, having been creating and installing what are known as point stools along our track. These are small concrete pillars which carry the the rodding which connect points to signal cabins.
