The Novice's Tale by Ann Swinfen 2nd in series: historical detective novel set in 14thC Oxford, it ends up being more a kind of medieval slice of life tale. Preferred the first book in series but was a decent plane read. 4/5

The Slavic Myths A collection of short stories retelling Slavic Myths paired with an essay explaining the myth. Absolutely beautiful illustrations inside the book but the retelling of the stories is done better in some chapters than others 4/5

The US almost started a war with China due to an AI hallucination appearing in an intelligence report. They are going to kill us all and it is going to be for the most stupid reasons imaginable

Numero Zero by Umberto Eco Operation Gladio mixed with critique of transitional newspaper industry. Thought I would love it but ended up not really liking it at all 😂 Maybe 30 pages of plot stretched out to book length? There are so many better books about Op. Gladio and stay behind networks 3/5

Given the terrible sales numbers it is possible a significant % of the readership of the new Mr Beast book are in fact content creators reading it for the purposes of mocking Mr Beast. And I think that is just neat

No matter how you feel about Niu Lai, we can all agree on one thing: something extraordinary happened in Chinese cinemas this month. A mother-and-son duo’s animated 3D film earned just 342 yuan ($50) on opening day. Then its crude visuals turned it into a viral success. This is a video thread.

First time in a long time reading any literary theory but I had fun Tracing how Shakespeare went from beloved playwright to Prophetic Great Artist via some weird Victorian religious trends and how our own views of Art have never really escaped that Victorian theology 5/5

M. L. Rio ''If We Were Villains'' Dark Academia at its best - you will love it if you like Donna Tartt's ''The Secret History'' Set at a drama department that only teaches/trains with Shakespeare - definitely going to be driving back into Shakespeare after this

Reading Romance of the 3 Kingdoms to practice my Chinese and learning such phrases as 打天下 (seize state power), 国难当头 (the country is in a state of crisis), 征兵 (recruit soldiers) and 结拜兄弟 (become sworn brothers). All phrases I am sure the climate crisis will make super relevant very soon!

Junichiro Tanizaki's ''In Praise of Shadows'' Interesting meditation on how modernity and Westernization changed Japanese/Asian aesthetics and hence culture. Gorgeous illustrated edition but the bit about race and beauty feels a bit outdated (book was first published before the War) 4/5

''The Diaries of Mr Lucas'' by Hugo Greenhalgh Diary of a mid-ranking oddball civil servant who floated through the gay world of mid-20thC London. Fascinating insight into gay life before and just after legalization, but our diarist (Mr Lucas) isn't very likable 4.5/5

At the Quan Am statue (or Lady Buddha) on Sơn Trà Mountain in DaNang, one of Vietnam's tallest Buddha statues. Despite being a major tourist draw, the temple and surrounding park are actually quiet and peaceful.
