1947: ARAI AND TOHO What did animator/dentist ARAI Wagoro create before leaving animation behind? What possessed Toho Pictures to throw an animated segment into a film about plovers? And which wartime force does that enormous ghost-wolf represent? douglaswatchesanime.co.uk/2026/08/26/1...
A black and white cartoon image. A enormously ghostly figure, with huge claws and a wolfish face, gestures threateningly above a mountainous landscape.

1935 ANIME RANT TIME In 1935, SEO Mitsuyo and his Nihon Manga Film studio made a cartoon called "一寸法師ちび助物語" or "Issunboshi - Chibi Jo Monogatari". And the American translators decided to call it "The Japanese Tom Thumb". And it made me very angry, when I came to write the review. 1/3
A black and white cartoon image of a miniscule person in samurai garb. He's in a bowl, which is in water, and he's pulling himself along with an equally tiny punt. He has a worried look on his face.

AMERICAN ANIMATION AND A REGENCY (1919-1926) Today on #DouglasWatchesEveryAnime, I look at American technical innovations and Japanese regal upheaval. Sometimes you have to get some backstory out of the way first. douglaswatchesanime.co.uk/2026/01/16/a...
A black and white drawing of a boy fanning an older man, looking over his shoulder at a small dog standing on a nearby windowsill. The caption text at the bottom reads "Bobby Bumps Fly Swatter", Earl Herd, 1916.

DWEA: THE ANIMATION BUBBLE (“1907”-1923) There were three dominant Japanese film studios at the start of 1917. There were exactly zero frames of animation. Who would be the first creators, and what would be the First Anime, to emerge? douglaswatchesanime.co.uk/2026/01/08/j...
A single frame of animation, showing a boy in a badly-lined up red cap. Above him are four Japanese characters, reading "katsu dō sha shin" - or "moving picture".
