Except that even after bombs had been dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there were MANY within the Japanese military who urged the Emperor to fight to the death. Simply destroying an island wouldn't have been effective. Clearly, the use of nukes was a last resort, and not something to celebrate.

I don't disagree. Using nukes was awful, but I DO believe the alternative would have been worse. They likely saved Japanese lives as well, as an invasion would have wracked up millions of casualties. The internment camps were one of the worst stains on our history.
