Doug @doug.city · 30/09/2026I love opening this app and sensing that discourse has occurred only by seeing the penumbra of meta-discourse, without seeing the discourse itself. (This suggests to me that I am curating my feed well.) 1110
Doug @doug.city · 30/09/2026It is also advertised rather prominently at Heathrow itself (including having uniformed staff standing there ready to sell you a ticket) in a way that makes it the most prominent/visible option and makes me suspect some percentage of people may not realize it’s not the only train to London. 150
Doug @doug.city · 30/09/2026They have rankings for everything now. Colleges, high schools, hospitals, cars, hotels. I am not sure they do anything other than rankings. 240
Doug @doug.city · 30/09/2026The most interesting thing here is that it’s per 100 kg, implying that both you and the fare inspector (?) are supposed to know how much the building materials weigh. 020

Doug @doug.city · 28/09/2026This is not necessarily to excuse the reliability issues, since obviously one of the most important functions of a railway is to transport people reliably. It is unfortunate that the infrastructure can’t keep up with the demand. But it’s only fair to discuss the positive aspects as well. 181
Doug @doug.city · 28/09/2026DB obviously has systemic issues with reliability (both ICEs I rode last week were delayed, conveniently allowing me to still make my connection…), but it does do many other things right. The website, app, and passenger info systems are top-notch and so are the ICE equipment and on-board experience. 2144
Doug @doug.city · 28/09/2026These were specifically saying I was in Texas, unrelated to local laws. 110
Doug @doug.city · 28/09/2026Yeah I encounter it when I roam internationally. Don’t recall getting it in Canada last month but I got it in Germany and the UK. 110
Doug @doug.city · 28/09/2026LOL, I walked past this the other day and was a bit baffled. Is this a thing? 100
Doug @doug.city · 27/09/2026I don't think this is widespread outside the US at all. Individual public transit operators may (or may even be required to) report such things for transparency purposes, but probably not to a national database. 060
Doug @doug.city · 27/09/2026I wonder if it’s a missing preposition or missing punctuation. You could imagine a comma there or something. 020
Doug @doug.city · 27/09/2026Same. Not at all clear to me whether proceeds from hypothetical development would accrue to FEC the railroad or FECI the Brightline parent. But either way, it’s a long-term thing, not something that would help with the immediate problem of paying off the construction debt. 010
Doug @doug.city · 27/09/2026Does FECI own the land FECR sits on though? (I’m genuinely asking, I don’t know the answer.) 100
Doug @doug.city · 27/09/2026I could be wrong but I assumed the real estate was still owned by FEC, which is now a totally separate company from Brightline. 100
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026I probably should have, but frankly, they left me with bigger things to complain about, such that I almost forgot about this. 010
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026I recently paid extra for a seat assignment on a flight (because of a previous experience with that carrier not assigning me until the *gate* otherwise) and then an equipment change left me with a totally windowless window seat. 🙃 120
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026I don’t usually post photos here at all, but I decided to make an exception in this case. 010
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026(A friend had the answer: a red sky at night being a sailor’s delight presumes that bad weather comes from the west, and nor‘easters come from the east, so this is the equivalent of a red sky at morning.) 050
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026I would much prefer that! (Actually I saw someone encouraging people in their own city to step up the sunset photo game and sure, go for it!) 110
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026(Here’s a nice one from London a couple of nights ago…so they do happen in other places, provided they’re sufficiently large and important cities of course.) 040
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026Anyway, about a sunset of all things? I realize “haha New Yorkers are assholes who think they live in the only place that matters” is an easy way to get engagement but step back and consider that you are *mad at people for enjoying the sunset*. I’m not sure the sunset enjoyers are the assholes here. 260
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026(I could, if I wanted to, complain that there are cities with 1/10 of the population whose local affairs are also inescapable here due to demographic and economic factors, but truly who cares?) 130
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026The complex this site has about NYC is so bizarre. Yeah, you’re going to see a lot of posts about it, because a lot of people live there. Nobody talking about the sunset or the weather are claiming other places don’t have such things, there are just (unfortunately for you, I guess) a lot of us. 170
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026I have seen more people on here making fun of New Yorkers for posting photos of the sunset than I have seen photos of the sunset. 2100
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026Wow, Berlin has changed a lot in the three days since I was last there. I didn’t hear that the Soviets took back over, but gay this time. 2181
Doug @doug.city · 26/09/2026The service gets very good ridership by US standards. There’s definitely a market for it; it’s not like they’re running empty (or infrequent) trains. The problem is that’s not enough to turn a profit, so extremely high ridership projections were needed. 4110
Doug @doug.city · 25/09/2026And it’s not as if the ridership is *low*! Just lower than the probably unrealistic levels needed to actually make money. 040
Doug @doug.city · 25/09/2026Clearly they thought they’d figured it out, and in spite of doing a really good job by many measures, it seems they didn’t. This should not come as a great surprise to anyone. 050
Doug @doug.city · 25/09/2026I am sure you could find some mistakes (everyone makes mistakes) but whatever they were were likely trivial in comparison to “think you can make money building and operating a passenger railway,” a thing that basically no one has figured out how to do. 3190
Doug @doug.city · 25/09/2026It’s not like there’s a track record of companies building and operating passenger railroads profitably in other countries. This is just a company that chose a business it’s wideky regarded as almost impossible to make money in and showed that, yes, it’s almost impossible to make money in. 3291
Doug @doug.city · 25/09/2026No worries! I have no expectations of conversationally from people who bump into me thousands of miles from home. And yes, I had a great time! 100
Doug @doug.city · 25/09/2026OK. I have made my point and don’t really have more to say on this matter. 010
Doug @doug.city · 25/09/2026Like I said: I am not offering an opinion on this specific person’s attendance. I am just saying it is not only a conference about rail and there is nothing inherently wrong with someone from an agency that does not operate rail service attending. 130
