It doesn't seem like empathy to me. It's more that he likes well-designed things, including the entire planet. He has a moral code, but it's intellectual, not emotional.

Interviewer: Can you explain this gap in your resume? Cosmologist: quantum fluctuations in the post-Inflation early universe were magnified to voids millions of years across. Or six months.

If they'd called it a "fiction" prize instead of "literature", he might be in with a shout at that one.

You can maybe have this happen once and it's okay, but you have to apologise and shut your agents down completely while you do a full investigation. Which they aren't going to do.

Ha ha, this otherwise completely plausible take falls apart on the observation that Arneson wasn't involved in Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. No doubt you're thinking of David "Zeb" Cook.

Perhaps like Zelazny, who did live long enough to learn better. Nine Princes in Amber, Whoops, Forgot the Princesses could have been a book in the second series.

Dear Google Photos: if you're going to put together a cat album for me called "The One and Only", please try to make sure they are all of the same cat. Because there are quite a lot of black and white cats out there, as well as two in this house.

Tenniel illustrated the Alice books: I think that's a fair use of the term. The illustrations are great, but take them away or replace them and you are still reading the same book. That's the dividing line: different artist means different comic.

There are people in the EU who badly want the UK back (e.g. Donald Tusk). It would be another negotiation, the UK could get some of its privileges back. Its size gives it bargaining power. (I may be doing wishful thinking, but I think it's possible.)

I think it is very unlikely that an AI tech could get exactly to human level of intelligence and no further: it would be quite a coincidence. But I don't believe any current or prospective tech is going to get anywhere near human level. So it's not worth worrying about.

That's a fair position! I think an always-on recording could have ethical uses as long as it's very visible. E.g. I assume cop cameras include audio, and the problem there is when they mysteriously stop working.

It's not using Ai, it's a straight recording. I'm wondering how much this is an Ai problem, and how much it's a privacy issue.

Minor frustration: I keep seeing posters for a film called Digger, and every time I have a moment of hope, and have to remind myself that it's not an adaptation of @tkingfisher.com 's wonderful graphic novel. Mind you, given it stars Tom Cruise, maybe the alternative would be worse.

Kill Plato, he was a nasty piece of work. Then fuck Socrates and marry Aristotle. You could travel and explore with Aristotle, but you'd just be arguing with Socrates all the time if you settled down together.

I find it harder when it's a writer than, say, a scientist. If a scientist is a bad person, well, it's a completely different skill set. But being good at writing needs a kind of empathy, and I don't understand how you can have that insight into people and put it aside to be a monster.
