Right? He's one of the richest people on earth, was free to pay his staff handsomely, and up until now has declined to adequately share his proceeds with his employees. We're supposed to believe he will, starting any day now? Just wait ... I promise... you'll see...

My HVAC emailed this morning to tell me it’s not working (the fact that it was 88 degrees in my house was the first clue), cars are driving by without anyone inside, and AI agents are emailing literary magazines to pitch stories they wrote. We are suddenly living in the weird robot future.

Swing voters are more likely to be younger and/or Hispanic and most of the northern states tend to be older and whiter.

Hello from San Diego, where we are minding our own business while the president invites another nation to destroy us and a room full of our fellow Americans clap and cheer him on. Thanks guys.

Yes, the 'it's going to replace everybody' pitch is ... not appealing to those of us who are not CEOs of companies with dollar signs in their eyes.

I'm not trying to be a historian. I'm just trying to read a document that I'm interested in and wouldn't have any idea what it said without help. If it gets some things wrong in this case, it doesn't matter. (I could see an argument that AI is better for casual hobby use than professional use.)

Realistically for a casual use like this I’m not going to learn the language, read a ton of books about the context, or pay someone. There are times you might of course.

I definitely would feel less confident using this for work or publishing the info. This is a family history document and nobody but me cares about it.

Doubtful Guest @doubtful-guest.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
but I'm a lot farther along than I would be without it. AI has a lot of ethical implications I'm not happy about but i can see that it is useful for certain things.

Another example is I'm using it to read a document from the 1700s that is in a language I don't speak. It is attempting to read it, translating, and explaining the document with context from 1700s law, currency, etc. The reading-old-faded-cursive part is where it performs the worst,

Exactly. If once or twice a year I want to read an article from a regional paper that isn’t from my area, I’m not going to subscribe, but I’d be happy to pay a small amount to read it. I agree that this seems like it would be a win-win.

In the San Diego Old Town cemetery, there is a grave for this poor guy who was hanged for stealing the only rowboat in San Diego Bay. Then there’s another guy who made “a murderous assault on his wife” and his punishment was he had to ring the church bells when the priest told him to. 🤔

So fuc*ing infuriating and sad. The CDC used to be the crown jewel of the world's scientific firmament. Other countries came to us for help fighting deadly diseases. Its disease detectives learned what caused illness and helped change practices to prevent them. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/26/h...

I have one like this, he did not care much about school for a long time and it was hard to know what to do, but in late teens he started turning around, college went well, and now in mid-20s is doing great. Being more internally motivated can have benefits in the long run, for what that’s worth.

Some coverage is totally self paid, but others are partially or fully subsidized by Medicaid. So the theory is the gov’t may be paying insurance companies to cover fraudulent enrollees.

Okay, so what happens when they go for their annual physical in November and find their insurance has been cancelled? I’m assuming never filed a claim means since 1/1 because that’s how ACA coverage works. He needs to address what happens about the people who they drop but turn out to be valid.

Somehow I feel that if the Democrats were in charge while we were in a war in Iran we started for no reason, gas prices were increasing, and the president and much of his cabinet was completely corrupt, Bret wouldn't be writing about the National Book Awards.

You can’t do everything but as Obama said, get caught trying. Give people something to vote for. The Dem party current favorability is 38% because Dems feel they are acting like a wet noodle instead of trying to fight back. It’s 2026, if they have plans they need to do better at communicating them.
